I was under the belief that in the off season, there was no salary cap. You had to be compliant by a certain date, but prior to that, going over resulted in no penalty.

If that is the case, and again I could be wrong, then why the concern now about signing Stamkos?

You can go over by %10 in the summer. But summer numbers also include those on LTIR. Those can only be put on LTIR during the season.

Can go over by 10% during the summer, then have to be compliant by the last day of camp.

I like the fact the Leafs acquired Andersen, he's a starter without question. It will be good when icing a team full of kids and the inevitable (frank) ups don't lead to a goal 100% of the time.

I'm not fond of trading away draft picks.

The Leafs have(had) 12 picks this year, and 9(?) next year. That, and with an already impressive prospect pool, the Leafs could afford to trade a couple.

We now need a backup goalie....wonder who it's going to be, hopefully not Sparks as he sucks....and decent ufa backup goalies on the market?

You're acquiring a 100% NHL'er versus a 5-10% possibility of an NHL'er down the road. One that may not even be as good as Andersen.
