This feels like a tampa fan getting in some shots at Stamkos because they know he's leaving.
Assuming they had the cap space there are probably about 28 GMs who would sign Stamkos to that deal. The reactions to Stamkos having a down year are the exact same that both Kane and Ovechkin had when they only scored sixty some odd points. - Joel_Eh
Problem is this isn't just "one down year". Personally I will be shocked if Stammer pots 50 again based on the player he is now. Without Marty feeding him pucks he has never been close to the same player. Now whether that is the absence of Marty, effects of the broken leg, or some combination thereof is up for debate.
Regardless of the (relative lack of) goals, my biggest issue with Stamkos has been his penchant for going invisible on the ice. When he was young he was one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, coupled with his lethal shot and you got a 50-60 goal scorer. He was scoring from everywhere and in many different ways. Fast forward to today and he is a shell of his former self. He's no longer even the fastest forward on this team much less the NHL. I guess my issue with paying him $10M+ per is any player who gets that much needs to be a difference maker almost every time he touches the ice. Looking around the league at other players who received close to that amount and this is the defining factor they have. Toews, Kane, Subban, Ovechkin, and Malkin all make $9M+ and based on the past few years all bring more to the table than the current version of Stamkos. Stammer was always a goal scorer, and at his best is/was one of the best. Well it's a far cry for a guy to pot 50+ a year and give him $10M+ vs a guy who struggles to get past 30 with multiple game droughts in between goals. |

Totally agree and that is, most likely, why he isn't signed yet. Yzerman wants $8.5m per year for maybe 8 years, Stamkos wants more than a $1.5m raise based on his production but he, as you said, is going down as a player. Is he still valuable, sure as hell is. Do I still want him in this uniform, you bet I do. I think he is a solid leader from everything a fan can see, he is a hell of a hockey player and he is great in this community. I think Yzerman is doing the right thing by not throwing $10m per at him because he has to keep this train moving along with more players then just Stammer.

The past 3 years, Jim Nill traded for seguin, speZza, and sharp in the off season and made many notable signings. Now he has 13 million in cap space with significant holes to fill on the back end, but Dallas is nowhere to be seen on Eklunds rumor chart. Somebody isn't doing his homework. |

Any GM who greenlights a Stamkos deal for $10+ million per year at max term should be fired instantly.
Stamkos is a great player, but not worth nearly that kind of money. It says something about Tampa's considerable depth at forward if they can let him walk. - GalacticStone
Yes it does, you showed that with your playoff run this year with him sidelined. I think you guys are in pretty good shape either way.

Is that even allowed?
Sounds like something that could be open to collusion. - ne_one
Yes it is allowed, you are trading his rights prior to free agency, if the team can't sign him before July 1st he still becomes a free agent and is free to sign wherever he likes. It would be a real homer move but I imagine they could do it if he didn't sign with the team who traded for his rights. |

Carle 5.5 - Alexzanki
Damn you Pronger for making Carle look decent
In all seriousness the Carle contract is awful. However, at the time we signed him we had just traded the ageing Kubina at the deadline, it was becoming apparent Ohlund was never going to play again, and we were left with the likes of Brett Clark and Brendan Mikkelson in our top 4. Signing Carle was a necessity of sorts, problem was his declining level of play was covered by Pronger and Yzerman fell for the fool's gold of Prongs partner to try and fill a void in our top 4

We traded basically two months of Jamie McGinn which was the 76th overall pick for him.
Its not exactly the farm.
