Hexy.

Would you like to add a top-6 forward in free agency?

Do I hope to? Yes. Are we going to? I don’t know. Term scares me, because term gets you in trouble. So if the right player’s there, at the right dollar figure, at the right cap space, we’re going to take a run at him. If he’s not, we’re not. We’re not doing something July 1st that two minutes later we are going to regret and we’re not doing something that we’re going to regret in two or three years when these kids’ contracts are up and we end up having to trade a young kid because of cap space and veterans are aging. I don’t know. Would I like to? Yes. Are we going to? I don’t know.

Change it to a 3rd and retain 20% on AMac and I'd do it. I don't think Detroit does.

What's everyone's feeling of Datsyuk for HHOF? One of the best 2-way forwards of his time, had some top-5 point finishes, won some Lady Byngs. Does he get in?

Absolutely, not even a debate in my opinion.

Thats why I think we need to give a 2nd, and I wouldn't be surprised if we had to retain some of a macs contract...

We need some sort of chart that answers the question every time someone asks if we're interested in a 30+ yr old UFA where all questions just lead to no.
- hereticpride

While we're at it, make one up for trading prospects such as Sam Morin to move up in the draft.

He may not command as much as the top teir ufa's but he's still going to want a 3 or 4 year deal with an avv over 4m, so I'd pass.
- Gnrlbot

I can see why pass, just a player I'd give a call to show interest who isn't a top tier guy in FA

Since both players have been mentioned this offseason a fair amount:

Reported this morning Isles and Nielsen aren't close on a new deal. And that Martin could very well be on his way out. Also mentioned Martin could* get a 4 year 10M open market deal.

Detroit won't do that trade. Why get stuck with AMac when you can get a bunch of freed up cap room after this season. For Detroit to consider that you'd need to change the 2nd to Konecny Sanhiem or Provorov.

Alright then, let me pose this one:

Is Pavel Datsyuk better than Sergei Fedorov? To me, he's not, and it took Fedorov several years to get in. Granted, Fedorov was never the same player after he left Detroit, but he was, to me, the best all-around player in the league from about 1993-1998. Dude even switched to defense for when called upon, and was playing at Norris level.

Well Amacs deal saves them some cap and you are giving them a 2nd and eating some of his contract to make it worth it.

Plus amac is better then nothing

Martin is good, but he's a 4th liner, so that's too much term.

Detroit should be able to find some bottom feeder to take that one without an albatross coming back.

7 M million in cap room is better than being stuck with AMac

Both Martin and Neilsen are going to get good raises.

Someone mentioned Brouwer and I thought of him too but after the playoffs he had he is probably getting a good payday too.

I think solid guys would be players like Colton Sceviors, Johnathan Massachualt and maybe Alex Chaission if he doesn't get a QO from Ottawa. They can all upgrade the bottom 6 and none of them should put a bind on the team in regards to term or cost.

If they don't resign White I wouldn't mind a 1 year deal on a guy like Vernon Fiddler. I know he is 36 but could be a good guy take draws, kill penalties and provide a solid option to the 4th line.

While im not disagreeing with you, im sure you could debate the merits of taking amac over 7.5 mil of dead cap space.

When you look at their careers side by side they are very evenly matched. Both Hof material in my books.

If AMac had 1-2 years left, maybe they'd do it. But not for the length of that deal.

Not if they want to take a run at Stamkos. They need to clear space out. Moving the cap space now lets them do that.

I don't know, I watched both play their entire careers (minus Fedorov's first 2 seasons) and Datsyuk, while a great player, was never as good defensively as Fedorov. He was good, but not that good. Sergei was also faster, but Datsyuk was a better stickhandler and passer. Very similar players, but Sergei was better (in my opinion). But still, it took Sergei a while to get in, so I'm not sure Datsyuk makes it in his first time.

One other guy who'd I entertain a 1 or 2 year offer to is Vanek if he does get bought out by the Wild. Prob not a popular suggestion but he is a LW and can score 20 goals

I don't think taking AMac, even at $4M instead of $5M, helps them enough. It saves them $3M this year, and then they're stuck with him moving forward.

I thought of him too.

If it could be a 1 year deal to let him try to parlay into one last payday. I would be ok with him as a top 6 player.
