We need some sort of chart that answers the question every time someone asks if we're interested in a 30+ yr old UFA where all questions just lead to no.

Well, now that Cleveland has broken its 150+ season championship dry spell, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs finally win it all this year (obviously, they've got a great squad regardless). So where does that leave us? There's definitely some potential with the Flyers, and maybe the Eagles and Sixers too... but potential only goes so far.

It leaves us with an 8-year dry spell, as a city.

I knew he was good, but not THAT good.

He's incredible. Blocks shots. Skates. Does other stuff.

He's better than this stuff

All kidding aside, if you are going to sign an FA over 30, the following questions need to all be answered with yes:

1. Is he a true impact player?
2. Does this player add something to the roster that is sorely lacking?
3. Has he been relatively injury free during his career
4. Is he still playing at, or very near to, his peak level
5. Is he willing to sign the deal without a full NMC/NTC

If all 5 can be answered yes, then go ahead and sign him if you can come to a reasonable contract agreement.

People need to quit female doging about spending their hard earned money to see a championship once every 30 years

I'd consider a depth guy over 30 on a short term deal.

I like Backes, but at some point a guy like that will start to decline and it's dicey to predict exactly when that decline will occur. You add a 30 or 32 year old, he has a good year or two, then hits that wall and he's an untradeable albatross.

They can't even entertain a clause that would force them to protect such a player over a kid like Laughton or Cousins, either. With a cap, decisions like this are dicey

One 30 year old guy I'd take a shot on is Brouwer. Also think we could get him short term. He'd be a nice veteran depth guy who isn't afraid to gets to the dirty places on the ice. And he can score too.

I think you need to add:

6. Will it put the team in contention?

Tufte was kind of meh when he was in the USHL, but he did dominate Minnesota high schools. He's got all the tools, just would like to see him have more exposure against higher level competition.

Katchouk is on my list, too. He's a pretty safe pick. Good skills, smarts. Might not end up being a huge producer, though.

He may not command as much as the top teir ufa's but he's still going to want a 3 or 4 year deal with an avv over 4m, so I'd pass.

Change it to a 3rd and retain 20% on AMac and I'd do it. I don't think Detroit does.

What's everyone's feeling of Datsyuk for HHOF? One of the best 2-way forwards of his time, had some top-5 point finishes, won some Lady Byngs. Does he get in?
