both Cs you have ahead of kadri either havent proven anything at the NHL level or... simply arent the leafs property

it will be interesting to see if the leafs go after stamkos... i mean obviously they look into it... thats their job... but with the prospect of having a matthews kadri one two punch down the middle might be enough to temper the leafs efforts regarding stamkos

Respect you view, Matthews is certainly unproven and has not even been drafted by the Leafs. I can't see the Leafs moving this pick or not picking Matthews. The amount of coverage on juniors and the level of social media and coverage - relative to previous eras - lends me to believe Matthews is the real deal. Some say not as good as McDavid or Eichel - but the numbers are there. He is statistically the best ever center to come out of the US. Best NHL center out of the US was Modano - a reasonable comparison. I agree Stamkos is just wishful thinking at this point - but the management team created lots of cap space for a reason. There is no way the Leafs will not be a max cap team once they are competitive.

something like that perhaps, I may be way off but with how it works (getting the team up to cap and not actually paying any money...) someone like Arizona you'd think would jump on it.

I agree, I think it will be a prospect and a second rounder - but the Leafs will not be in on this. Teams trying to artificially increase their cap spending will be the players
Arizona,Carolina, NJ and maybe Calgary. The reason it won't cost more is that the contract will not cost real money like Horton's deal.

Yes I agree on Matthews, always have.

Generally, I am not a huge fan of giving scorers a big contract that extends too far on the down side of 30. But, Stamkos is the exception. He is a bit younger and although he is past peak performance (60 goals) he is still an elite player. But, would not do the deal if you cannot insure against injury.
