Player A on our team that we've been developing had a bad year but is still only 23 years old. Bum...give him away
Player B is a free agent who has never been on a winning team but does good in one statistical category: let's trade picks and pay him 8 mil per year
Player C is a soft winger who had one good year: let's pay him 5 mil and convert him to center

Another losing formula

- LandlordTom

you mean player A who refuses to play the coaches system?

Zetteberg is turning 36 in October. He is a shell of his former self.

Eichel and Larkin is a wash

Like I said long term looking at the roster I would take the Sabres over the Wings

I agree but it seems like the clout of Detroit often wins out.

I think Detroit is losing their clout to be honest.

Datsyuk leaving is the beginning of the end for their playoff run IMO.

We'll see. If they do trade Datsyuk's salary and sign Stamkos they're right back to success. Maybe it would be for the best if it turns out that it was truly between them and Toronto. I'd take him in Detroit all day over being with those scumbags

They will, and it won't be that hard. Holland's just posturing today to set the groundwork for trade talks.

Stamkos doesn't fix half of their problems IMO.

It would keep them in the playoffs sure but first round and out.

They just aren't built like a Tampa or Pittsburgh

The case for trading Bogo now is simple people, don't over think things:

If he stays on the team, we will have to protect him in the expansion draft due to the NTC coming up. You can only protect 3 dman: Risto, Bogo and whatever LHD we acquire. That's forces us to expose mccabe = bye bye mccabe. Everybody okay with that? Didnt think so.

Not totally true

You can protect 4 D and then you would protect ROR Kane Stamkos (god willing) and another player.

Eichel Reinhart Vesey (again god willing) Bailey Fasching don't need to be protected.

You can protect 7 forwards 3 D and a goalie

OR 8 skaters and a goalie

Say you add Fowler and Bogo is still here...

You protect Bogo cause you have to, Fowler, Risto and McCabe

Then you can protect 4 forwards. ROR Kane for sure. That leaves 2 more forwards that protect. If you sign Stamkos he is one of them. That leaves 1 more so out of: Moulson, Ennis (if he is here), Foligno (if he is here), Girgensons (if he is here), Larsson (if he is here) or another addition of a forward that you can protect. Plus 1 goalie (Lehner gets protected)

Eichel, Reinhart, Bailey, Fasching are already protected by the rules. As would Vesey (if he picks Buffalo) and whoever we draft this year.

So the Sabres aren't as screwed as people seem to think they are when it comes to the expansion draft.

Pittsburgh if they don't move Fleury is screwed as they would lose Murray instantly.

I'd rather lose Bogo and his cap hit than Larsson, Girgensons or Ennis.

If Bogo were much better than McCabe, Pysyk or even Franson, I'd agree on keeping him. But the fact is he really isn't. Whether it's injuries or inconsistent play, Bogo is replaceable. Our top 9 isn't.

Not really. Bogosian needs to go. Let's hope we get something for him and sign someone who's better in their own end

I love how everyone only points out the negatives of every player...like reinhart last year when people were losing their minds....give it a year and see what happens.

Bogo and Mccabe played well to end the season and imo helped 29 take the next step.
Reading into analytics is a good thing but refusing to look at other aspects of the game other than analytics is what drives me insane

This is where your hatred of the trade shows.

Had you said just Ennis I would be fine. But you would rather keep a bottom 6 guy over a top 4 defensemen

Then you're still protecting whomever you trade him for regardless and that leaves a hole on the blueline...

You're still protecting 4 D.

To be fair I've been Reinhart pro camp since day 1 and you can back read all you want on that. Always thought he should be up here all year since last summer

I was also against the Kane trade. I do like what Kane has brought to us thus far but have been very disappointed by Bogosian. I think Bogosian looked good in the offensive zone at the end of the year but the job of a defenseman is to be good in your own end. He is not good in his own end.

Let's say it's Fowler Risto and McCabe and let's say we sign a guy like Demers to replace Bogosian.

Then we save O'Riley, Kane, Foligno, Player X, Girgensons, Ennis . Then you still have a choice to save a guy like Demers or use it on one of your depth forwards. I'd rather free up Bogosian and his term and look for a more reasonable player to fulfill his 2nd pairing duties

You can't protect O'Reilly, Kane, Foligno, Player X, Girgensons, Ennis AND protect 4 D

If you protect 4 D you can only protect 4 forwards.

So like I said regardless with the way the team is built now and if you want to be a winner unless you trade for a player who will be exempt from being picked (no team is giving that player up BTW) you need to have a solid top 4 D and all 4 of those guys would need to be protected.

With the way the forwards are age and contract wise the smart play would be to move up to the top 3 draft a fin sign stamkos and protect 4 D and you're golden if you can pull a trade of Ennis or Girgensons for Fowler type.

You protect Fowler, Bogo, Risto, McCabe and expose Pysyk

Good explanation stripes - thus makes sense - I never considered the 8 player protection vs the 7-3. We would lose a good young forward in this scenario but that's okay. Further shows the importance of signing Vesey
