Not a homegrown talent discount, but a homegrown talent exception.
I guess you mean "cap discount", so essentially the same thing.
My thought would be you have a clause like the NBA, I think, which allowed you to exceed the cap to sign your own FA's.
Instead of a penalty like Hossa's or Keith recapture penalty, the NHL would be better served to allow teams to re-sign their own draft picks and prospects and exceed the cap and penalize the overage if they are traded before a specific amount of time - TheTrob
yes that is what I meant. I was thinking along the lines of something like if Saad/Shaw/TT, etc. could be resigned for x amount and only 50% of the hit counts against the cap |

Every time I go to 2nd city hockey twitter page, brain cells die.
My god...I'm not the biggest Bowman fan, but that Zawaski retweet shows you just how many people can't comprehend a cap world and not having/getting decent return when you are up against the cap. Nobody is going to help out the Hawks.
And to think JZ is a so called hockey "expert" in this town is beyond sad. - SteveRain
Zawaski was the primary source for the Saad trade (said originally that he was hearing the two sides are far apart) and he was the first to suggest the Hawks could trade Bickell but it might cost them Teuvo. I don't follow him entirely, but it seems like he is the Hawks' go-to guy for dropping some rumors.

Source says #Blackhawks fully expect to re-sign Andrew Shaw with Bickell's contract off the books. Still waiting on cap number, though. - DarthKane
While I want Shaw to be resigned, I hope it is not for more than 3 years. I worry his body won't be able to hold up to all the punishment he takes night in and night out. I love the way he plays, but he is only 180 lbs.

Agreed. It's not like he throws out 30 rumors, hits on one, and then pats himself on the back. He typically only reports a few things and has a pretty good track record with them happening.

How does this trade play into your sources knowledge and what information he passed along? Not looking for specifics, but does it nullify what you heard or make it more possible?

Didn't you guys hear, you're trading for Malkin because he wants out of PGH so he can be "the guy"................ |

You might be right. However, there really isn't much in the way of "competition" for Zawaski. Nobody really covers Hockey on the radio or TV side other than the company shills, or newspaper beat guys who will never go out on a limb for fear of being cut off completely. Kuc, Lazerus, Meyers, Konroyd, Boyle, etc., etc. etc. None of them will ever say anything but what they have been Ok'ed to say. Nothing controversial. With no regular outlet to stir the pot if needed, Zawaski may just be the guy. |

I would take Hartnell and his 3 years at $4.75 before resigning Ladd for more than that. |

Ladd is Hawks property until the 30th right ?
Well after this trade why not sign him and let Shaw walk. ?
I love Shaw but his playing style and bad back wont hold up much longer . If Ladd takes a 5 year 4.5m per he could fit in. Considering Ladds point totals thenlast 5 years anyone who offers him more than that is a tad crazy. |

Just turned 34. Ladd is what 30?
Either way, Stan would have to shed other notable salary, even after the Bickell dump. |

Scales fairly well to the 'Hawks parades, given the huge ratio in metro populations. - blackhawk24
It actually scales perfectly (and Kudos to Pitt for the turnout) I'm just trying to pee on their parade since I'm bitter it's them and not us! |

He can probably get that from other teams. I would like a shorter term.

Shaw and Ladd are both players you win championships with. Both can lead by example and slide up and down the lineup. Shaw is 24 - gotta sign and keep him. He is the most versatile forward on the team. |

As long as there is no NMC or NTC, I'd be ok with that, but he would have to know that he would be exposed to the expansion draft...and would probably get chosen. That's the kind of guy I would want as my first captain. |

With all due respect, yuck. I want nothing to do with Hartnell.
Right out the gate, will just say that I was a huge TT fan when they drafted him at 18th. Quality pick at the time. Thought he would see that 2C potential, but I was wrong. He has the mentality of a C, but has the size of a winger. He doesn't play a "big" game which is needed especially in the corners as a winger. So in essence, you have to look at the deal as a 2nd and 3rd for TT. My opinion, it's a win. Guy wasn't playing top 6 minutes.
As far the Hawks playing the FA market, if they can acquire Nielsen somehow, that is a HUGE pickup. More than confident that Isles fans would agree that Nielsen is a guy you can put up the middle or on the left and still be an extremely solid player. I have watched my fair share of Nielsen here on the Island and I can tell you he should be a top, top player on every teams list. |

Very comparable stats over last 3 years.
Ladd will probably want more $ and more years than 3 yrs $4.75 mil. I would not pay it.

I was not expecting to see TT go. The logical path was to buy out 29 and let 86 continue to develop or hope he does. If it came down to the fact that Ladd would agree to stay at a reasonable deal?? Ladd or Shaw? I know Im way off, but I would really like to keep Ladd. Money is still very tight and one would think another deal has to be in the works. I think an off season of rest would help Ladd a great deal.
Stan ain't messing around. To look at it another way is that Stan got out in front of the salary cap number and got Bicks off the books. If I could go back to the Ladd trade, I would have rather sent TT then Dano. Oh well.. |

Hartnell plays on the edge like Shaw, Brouwer or Buff. He would give the Hawks some much needed vinegar.
No one appreciated Lackey's mean streak or wanted him on the Cubs. Plenty of people appreciate him now. |
