Schneiders numbers are more impressive than Crawfords since Schneider came to NJ.

No clue why NJD bothers trading for CC

- hawkeytalkman

Buffalo traded a 1st round pick last year for a goalie who played very well despite his lack of fitness due to concussion the prior year. I don't see them looking at Crawford at all anymore.

Id be weary about dealing with lou in toronto. He is tough to trade with. I doubt he will be willing to eat any salary. However the leafs can offer more sub million dollar players then possibly any other team.

Honestly looking at the cap even with this trade I don't see where the money is for Shaw. Unless a different big $$ guy goes I think the need to still consider trading shaw. With all the talk about paying guys for what they have done vs what they will do how much longer can shaw be shaw. Dude is small and gets beat on each night. I love him but this may be the time to add more picks and let some young guys get a chnace. You pay shaw 3 mill for 4 years next year where does panarins $$ come from?

Every time I go to 2nd city hockey twitter page, brain cells die.

My god...I'm not the biggest Bowman fan, but that Zawaski retweet shows you just how many people can't comprehend a cap world and not having/getting decent return when you are up against the cap. Nobody is going to help out the Hawks.

And to think JZ is a so called hockey "expert" in this town is beyond sad.

I know. He's RFA so it has to be 105% of his last one which was 2m per. Minimum would be 2.1m

Shaw's salary last season was $2.5 million, so it would be $2.625 million.

I'm getting 3-4 years around $3.5 million.

I think the likeliest destination where CC might go, if he goes, is to a young, rebuilding club, with talent everywhere but in net, or to a GM who is a believer in him above what else is out there and sees him as a chip that helps take a good team to a great team.

I have heard him mentioned in connection with (as teams that like him and would deal for him):

WPEG
BUF
NJ

I would not rule out Toronto or NYI

- John Jaeckel

Toronto and Buffalo have 23 picks total in this year's draft so they have some currency to spend.

I doubt very much Cro gets moved, but if the Islanders are seriously interested in winning they should be sniffing around because they will never ever win with Halak.

I like the move, in the big picture; this cannot be viewed in a vacuum. Stan pulled off the biggest need first and he did it early.

$4M cap space savings this year on Bick's instead of only $3.05M being buried in the minors, or a $1.5M cap hit year being bought out 17-18. Glad I was wrong on that guess.

TT may be a fine player one day. But Stan moved from a position of strength. TT was blocked by 81/88, and he never seemed willing to accept the need to bulk up.

What Stan could not accomplish all the way into FA last year, got done over a week before this years' draft. Nice job Stan, hope you have a few more moves up your sleeve. Would love to see cap conscious moves to help 17-18 as much as 16-17.

I thought it was based of cap hit, not salary. He got 1.5m then 2.5m for a 2m cap hit. I could be wrong.

Weird, I always thought it was 10% increase across the board. Just looked it up and if a player makes 1M+, their qualifying offer minimum is their prior salary.

(per wikipedia anyways)

I'm pretty sure it's based on the salary in the last year of the contract, not the cap hit. at $2.5 million the qualifying offer is actually at 100%.

I would be ok with signing Ladd and letting Shaw walk
- Colbyboy

I agree only if
Ladd would take a short term (2 or 3 years) deal at a reasonable price $4 mil.
Shaw is asking for more than Kruger got.

TT was something of an enigma to me.

Skilled young player with great potential, but lacking in size and averse to contact. With his skillset would've liked to have kept him around longer...

...but so be it. The NHL's hard cap is harsh.

I repeat my wish for some form of a luxury tax for clubs that max out the cap. Tired of clubs being punished so harshly for success.

or at the very least some sort of homegrown talent discount, otherwise you continue to punish teams for drafting well, developing well, and for success in winning

Ladd's last deal was 5 years 22 million.
He's 30

No one is going 6 years 36 million

I would say Shaw is 3 million and Ladd 2 years / 4 per
Question
Is he worth the extra million.

- Colbyboy

Agree on both.

I'm hoping Shaw puts his money (or lack there of...) where his mouth is and gets as scrappy with his agent as he plays on the ice.

I know he came from very little and he's mentioned this game of hockey has provided him more than he could have dreamed of.

From what I've heard, his super low-maintenance, doesn't need much in life... just loves hockey and loves the boys.

My prediction is 3 years, $10M which may be considered a "hometown" discount at this point.

Wonder if there will be more moves to maybe clear up a bit more cap to address the LW and D needs.

Hard cap is necessary. No advantage to teams with deep pockets.

Not a homegrown talent discount, but a homegrown talent exception.

I guess you mean "cap discount", so essentially the same thing.

My thought would be you have a clause like the NBA, I think, which allowed you to exceed the cap to sign your own FA's.

Instead of a penalty like Hossa's or Keith recapture penalty, the NHL would be better served to allow teams to re-sign their own draft picks and prospects and exceed the cap and penalize the overage if they are traded before a specific amount of time
