What if Hextall told Umberger that they can afford to keep him around another year because they are rebuilding. They won't buy him out but if he wants they could mutually terminate the deal so he can look for another opportunity. Right now he is slotted for the 13th forward role. - J35Bacher
People were thinking that could be a possibility with Vinny, however he made wayyy more money then RJ has. He would be nuts to walk away from 3mill just to play some more hockey... (which he could still do if they buy him out). |

Well Vinny is walking away from money since he said he would retire to facilitate a trade.
I believe there is no way a team takes Vinny, including the kings, if he isn't agreeing to retire. |

I would put it out there. I'll pay him to play his 13th forward role. If injuries happen use call ups over him. Just let him sit for a year. Then the full cap is gone.
Does he have better chance of a deal just sitting a year basically of maybe finding a team, play on a cheap deal an parlay it into a little more of a deal.
At his age and production he isn't going to get a lot after this year either way. - J35Bacher
I'll go out on a limb and say he's probably not going to get anything from anywhere when this contract is over. |

He might get another cheap deal. Hell Zubrus is still around.

Right now, Hexy is waterboarding Umberger to agree to a mutually agreed termination. - jmatchett383
But I just why everybody thinks that Sam Gagner is unlikely for next year.
Personally I think he does have a place on this team

I'm talking post-80s/Edmonton, and even post-lockout.
Still, I don't know if he was even a top-3 goalie, and again, I think that Moog and Ranford were just about as good. - jmatchett383
Ranford was pretty streaky, when he was on, he was fantastic, when he was cold, he could be awful. Moog was very steady and consistent. Fuhr though, much like Billy Smith in the Isles heyday, always played his best in the biggest games. To me, that's when a goalie earns his keep.

I think he is more option z.
He isn't in the future plan but could be a fallback option if nothing happens.

Depends on how much money he'd want and the circumstances involved (i.e.--other moves Hexy tries don't work as expected), but I could see a scenario where he comes back.
I just don't think it's going to happen. |

Vinny did walk away from some cash, but he's also getting money from Tampa for another 10-12 years.
Umberger has a NMC, so he can block a move to the minors and the extra season of dead cap is a minor penalty. The biggest issue is, if the Flyers sign Schenn for $4.5mm and Gudas for $2.5mm they'd have about $2-$2.5mm left under the cap needing to fill a couple minor holes, if the cap stays stagnant as Daly says it will |

I think the "why" comes from figuring out what the market is for Sam Gagner.
He's not getting a raise on what he was making (if anything, I suspect he's getting a substantial paycut). Does he want term? What's he looking for?

Assuming of course that they don't trade Read, Streit or, by a minor miracle, AMac.
