traded on the 2nd of July to Bongcouver for 2nd rnd pick in 2018 and a 3rd in 2017.

I'm pretty sure Benning wouldn't be happy unless he was giving up at least a 1st rounder in 2018. |

If he is going to spend the entire year on LTIR then definitely do not buy him out. But how much of a certainty is that? - Mr_Smokey

Lou Lamoriello says Stephane Robidas's career could be over. Says he doesn't know whether Robidas or Joffrey Lupul will play next season.
12:42 PM - 10 Apr 2016
I don't know how certain this is, but I think it's laying the groundwork for round 2 of robidas island. Obviously saying he doesn't know isn't a slam dunk, but I think it's pretty telling. |

Yeah who knows id be suprised to see him dealt but i dont see any reason why they cant work around his contract being on the books for the next two seasons especially after this season with Laich Michalek Bernier coming off the cap. - ClarksonDavid
Or work around the contract this year, and then figure out what you want to do. |

If Robidas remains lost and the Leafs carry Marner, Nylander and a couple of other rookies they are currently sitting with about 16.5 milly in Cap space. They need to re-sign 3 of the RFA dmen to modest contracts and add another goalie.
Even if they're lucky enough to add S.S. then you offset that by moving one of the other centres like Bozak. Net gain is only about 6 milly. Tonnes of space.
All of that assumes they carry Michalek, Laich and Lupul all year too. - The Law

Leafs are really in great shape when it comes to the cap. How beautiful is that. The Phaneuf trade, Clarkson deal.. just beautiful. Bernier, Laich, Michalek, Greening all gone off the books after this season. lots of flexibility. |

So my question still stands: Is Lupul OK with this, or is he going to be pissed with being sent to Robidas Island? |

I honestly dont see how anyone could think its a good idea to buy him out. Then he will be on the cap for longer when leafs may actually need it. - ClarksonDavid
Well..... If it comes down to him being on the roster for 2 years or having to buy him out and take a minor cap hit for 4 years (2 or 3 of which the cap isn't a concern) then buy him out.
If he's going to spend the season on LTIR then of course you don't buy him out. |

Why not have him on the roster as a veteran presence everyones always worried about then? Its two years and hes not the worst player in the league. |

Spent like half the year there this year and didn't say boo. Robidas spent all year there and was quiet about it. Perhaps there is some incentive to go? |

My bad.
Another Wedgie Wild Guess (WWG): the 5 for 1 contract trades won't happen that much - most GMs realize how the 50 contract constraint can handcuff a team.
It would be interesting to see a team by team breakdown of # of contracts. - Atomic Wedgie
Agreed. It hast to line-up that both teams need to get something.
We got contract space.
Grabner made $5M in actual salary last year. Ditching that $5M helped out a team that consistently loses money.

The Leafs are not going to keep Lupul for another year just for the opportunity to expose him to the expansion draft in hopes LV chooses him.
Lupul's career is all but over. Buy him out and move on. - Mr_Smokey
You may want this but I don't see it happening. He needs to pass a physical and if he can't pass that, then he'll still be a Leafs. |
|
|
|
Will we see another Grabner-like deal? - Aetherial
i hope so. just to get some contract off the 50 limit thing. |
|
|
|
Leafs dont need the cap space so why buy him out and have him count against the cap when they might need it... makes no sense at all. But him out next year of anything but would be silly to this year and probably wont need to next year either... - ClarksonDavid
he can be traded next year as his cap hit will be more the the final year of his contract.
AZ couple be his next destination. |

That's the vet presence you want? I think they can absorb that 1.5 mil buyout and find a better vet presence for 3.5 mil and there you have the total of what Lupul would make. |

Not a minor cap hit - $1.5 million, $3 million, then $1.5 million for two more years. It's a stupid move for a team with right now salary flexibility and tons of picks and prospects that can be packaged off in a trade. Lupul will either be on LTIR or be dealt to someone that needs to reach cap floor.

Not sure any player walks away from 10 million USD. But we can safely say that no team wants him on their roster. - Mr_Smokey

Huge difference between the 2 players.
Both are poop, but one is a black hole on your roster while the other at least can get in the lineup. |
