If Ray is interested maybe he can work something out pre-buyout with Lou and take the guy and a pick. Clear out more cap space for Toronto (not that they're in bad shape)...

Cowen is being bought out because he is trash.

It costs Carolina $4.0 million in actual cash for Bickell plus Teuvo cost, who also becomes a RFA next sesaon, so cash wise it is a lot more expensive than the Savard deal plus they gave up some valuable draft picks.

Right but Savard doesn't play. It's a great trade but in a different way. With those two, you're buying a young player with a world of upside and a serviceable forward. If he's an RFA, that's a non issue. He'll be signed.

In the end analysis, Bickell was the price to get Teuvo. Canes are fighting to get to the cap floor so Bickell helps there, and I assume not much else (other than "veteran presence" ). All in all a good trade for the Canes, hopefully Ray has some other ideas for the Devils.

I think that was generally in the context of what we'd get from the Hawks with him to make it worthwhile. I think there was talk about trading Clowe's contract to the and in that context it would be an improvement. Sort of like how David Clarkson is better then Horton for Columbus... but sadly by less then expected.
