Just thought about this but what if a condition was placed in a deal for shattenkirk?

If he doesn't sign, STL gives us their first rounder in 2017 or 2018.
If he does resign, STL gives us nothing.

This way, we don't just lose our 4th overall for "nothing" as some have suggested.

Just some food for thought.

Shattenkirk would be a killer option, but the likelihood of us extending him aren't good. Why chase the big white whale and let other options slip through the cracks.

But nonetheless, if Chia cannot get an extension in place prior to the deal, the next best thing is a conditional assertion. Like I said, a combination of conditional future picks (1st or 1st+2nd, etc) just in case Shattenkirk doesn't sign could definitely convince Edmonton to make the deal.

Not me, I think Yak is going to have a decent year this year. Is he going to ever live up to his first overall pick status? Doubt it, he just doesn't seem to have the hockey IQ, but I think he can certainly add value up to his current salary. And, I can't see getting much for him right now, so why move him.

Something like that could work. Although I would almost prefer more coming back if he doesn't re-sign. Like the STL 2017 1st and 2nd because chances are their 2016 1st is going to be 20+ so trading a #4 pick for a 20+ pick and only a year of Shattenkirk still feels gross.

We should do the same for Demers.
