Bit delayed, but...with LV coming on board, Leafs will be able to shake a great 1G out of a team with depth. ANA, PIT, NJD, DET, TBL for starters.
- Deeps27

They still should be able to now.
Expansion isn't a secret and said teams might want the asset or assets at the draft.

Just another day in the good ol' U. S. of A. Sad.

(frank) I'm glad that I don't live there and even more thankful for being Canadian.

Winning a cup has probably more to do with the GM - putting the pieces in place than the coach. That is not to say the coach has no part . But the biggest thing you should look at is who did the Ducks actually beat for the cup in 2007 - Ottawa Senators. Nuff said. The fourth seeded Ottawa Sens got into the finals by a total fluke and gifted Burkie and RC with a cup.

I wouldn't hold that too much against BB - who is a superior coach and a way superior human being.

So hiring Babcock was useless?

Sure they can do it now, but if you want to talk about maximizing assets why pull the trigger on a deal before the prices are rock bottom like at the TDL next year or in the off season? What's wrong with being bad for another year and getting a top-10 pick to use on a D?

Apparently he didnt' have anything to do with it. It was all Pronger and Niedermayer.

You don't need to coach when you've got two elite defencemen.

- H8terade

well since he has had so much success since then...we know he can win without them

What would it cost for ARI two firsts at #7 & #20 this year?

How can this be done without:
A. Trading the first overall
B. Trading Rielly, Marner or Nylander

Prying two first round draft picks away from a team that is essentially rebuilding is going to be impossible if you don't give them anything of value.

You can basically only hope that their new GM is Travis Yost or comparable.

In which case just start adding up average games played by lower round draft picks and make sure the offer equals the average games played by 7th and 20th overall players, historically speaking.

Trading laterr – you buy from whatever goalies are leftover.

Trading now – you get the guy you want.

Guys like JvR, Gardiner, Kadri, Kapanen, Brown or Carrick etc. or the 2017 1st or 2016 30th/31st don't carry value?

Off the top of my head, 7th overall for Kadri and 30th overall.

Not sure if that makes much sense for the Leafs. Or the Yotes with someone like Sergachyev or Juolevi available at 7.
