I think even getting calgary's pick would cost fleury, pouliot, sprong. The only chance at getting the #3 pick is if you could get calgary to trade the number 6 pick for soemthing like
Fleury + Pouliot + 2nd round pick
Wideman (salary dump for them) + #6 pick
#6 pick + sprong + 2nd
#3 pick
I'd do that deal from the pens perspective as I'd love to add a legitimate top line forward for the future that could replace one of Malkin/Crosby/Kessel. One of them will probably age poorly so it keeps you with 3 guys that can lead a line. - sditulli
If Wideman is coming over, I don't give up my 2nd unless they eat half of his salary. The team has a bit of cap flexibility and adding Wideman pretty much kills that

So the compensation for offersheet a is next year correct? To qualify Schults pens will have to give him 3.9mil for a year... If someone offer sheets him it has to be more correct? So anything over 3.75 mil gets Pens a 1st and 3rd....
Does anyone else see the beauty in trading a 3rd for him?!?!?

Have you noticed all the negative so called Pens "fans" have been silent ever since the mid February.

I'm pretty sure we have to QO him for someone to OS him. We can't QO him. Don't have the cap for that. Even if we did no one would OS him. Schultz was great for us a bottom pairing f but no one in their right mind would give him ~4 mil. |

As a Flyers fan, I wanted the Pens to lose. But as a hockey fan, you gotta hand it to them - definitely the best team this season and deserved to win. They pretty much steamrolled everybody they played from February on. And as much as I am annoyed by some comments from some Pens fans (certainly not all - probably just the trolls), I hope all of you can enjoy your team's victory - congrats. - copelal
Thanks. It was fun to watch, that's for sure! |

does anyone feel bad for Paul Martin? He signed a 5 year contract to win a cup here and we finally win one the year after he leaves.
I could be wrong but I thought I remembered some passive aggressive comment from him about San Jose being "the better choice to win a cup" after he left as a FA.

Pens would of won it with him this year, if he was still with them. I really liked Martin. |

Yeah I feel bad for him. I like Paul Martin a lot. He was steady and was constantly being asked to play a bigger role than he was suited for and didn't completely drown in it. U.S. Olympian was icing on the cake.
I don't think there were any passive aggressive comments or hard feelings. His piece in the player's tribune was very heart felt thanking Pitt. |

If he is qualified by the Pens any other team can still offer sheet him for whatever Schultz is willing to accept. Smart move for both parties would be for Schultz to re-sign for 1-2 years at $2.5M. His best chance at another big contract will come playing in Pittsburgh in the system that is best suited to his skill set.
Most likely, if a team is considering offer sheeting him they will just trade for his RFA rights. Id like to see Schultz back at under $3M but would also be happy if they moved him for a 1st/2nd. Puck moving RHD are in high demand. |

I just want to see the Guins, Steelers and Pirates win in the same season but the pirates prob gonna let me down - DeflatedPucks
Pirates' pitching staff is atrocious. Huntington didn't do a single thing in the offseason to account for the losses of Happ, Burnett ... |
|

I see some people STILL talking about a Schultz offer sheet. You people, are dumb. We are not offering him ~4.3 million, the 10% raise required to qualify and keep him as a RFA, thus no offer sheets will be made or required. |

The Daley trade happens regardless. Scuderi was out as soon as Sully came in and asked for speed.
Things we may not have seen:
Cullen/Fehr signings
Schultz trade
The first one would have been a cap issue. If Martin had signed it would have been for ~4 mil. Not sure how you fit in Cullen and Fehr with that additional cap hit.
The last one would have been need based |

Wy are we throwing a second round pick in there and take back a salary dump of Calgary's in Wideman? Have no use for that. Bad idea from a Pittsburgh standpoint. |

I don't think it's worth it for the Pens to try and finagle their way into the top 6. Too many specific and hard to pull off moves required and if one doesn't work and we fall short we (frank) ourselves.
I mean look at what happened last year with the Bs when they tried to scam their way into a top 5 pick. They ended up losing Hamilton for pennies and got stuck with three consecutive picks they weren't prepared to use |

If Martin had been signed, could it also not have been possible Dumoulin would be playing farther down in the lineup (would have been good for Maata, but I could have seen Sullivan employing Letang-Martin) |

Agree. Fleury's salary is fair but it is also large enough to limit his return. I wouldn't start packaging good young pieces (like Sprong) to try to get a high draft pick. There's a few can't miss types in the draft but its a huge gamble. Giving up multiple established assets for a question mark. And you better be right.... I'd rather have Maatta (22) than Pouliot (8)... |
