As a Flyers fan, I wanted the Pens to lose. But as a hockey fan, you gotta hand it to them - definitely the best team this season and deserved to win. They pretty much steamrolled everybody they played from February on. And as much as I am annoyed by some comments from some Pens fans (certainly not all - probably just the trolls), I hope all of you can enjoy your team's victory - congrats.

Yeah, it would be wise to not hold your breath on the Pirates. Because, you know, Nuttings wallet.

Hoping the Pens dont make a big splash in Free Agency. My top questions:

1. Can Crosby and Lemieux show up with the Stanley Cup to Jimmy Vessey's door and ask him if he would like to raise it over his head next season. That would obviously be the biggest coup for the Pens.

2. What to do with Pouliot. He is an NHL level player for sure, Pens just havent put him in a position to succeed. Its a shame too, as he has the talent set to match the Pens needs. They need to either make room for him or part ways this offseason.

3. What can you get for Fleury? Would be nice to package him with a 2nd rounder and a prospect to get into the top 10 via Buffalo or Calgary.

*4. If the #3 pick is available, can the Pens get there? A lot of pieces would need to come together but if they did get a top 10 in exchange for Fleury, would you package that with Sprong (maybe more) to get Puljujarvi? I probably would.

Lets see.
The Fleury/Murray tandem will cost the pens $6.4m next year
Henrik Lundqvist/Raanta tandem will cost the rags $9.5m against the cap

hmm...

1. Nope, he most likely goes to Boston

2. With Lovejoy leaving and possible Schultz if he gets offer sheeted, that puts him in lineup. If Schultz stays and they run maatta letang Dumo Daley Cole Schultz then I say trade him to Dallas for Nish and pick up a lovejoy type deal at free agency

3. My guess is same return as Staal. Top 10 pick, player and prospect. I would go after Calgary then get a True LW

4. I would not gamble on that. Tkachuk could be there at 6 and I would love that

No the Pens don't need to make room for Pouliot, he needs to win a spot. I wouldn't move him this offseason unless a good trade comes up that gets us a top 6 LW or a good RD in a package. We need the cheep D depth and he gets one more chance to prove himself. If he continues to do nothing for us get rid of him next offseason.

Buffalo will not be in the market for a goalie. They gave up a lot for Lehner who was actually pretty good this season when healthy.

I just don't see Vesey going anywhere but Boston.

Fleury wont bring back near the same return as Staal. Pens will have to give up Fleury + to get Calgary's #6 pick. Unfortunately Tkachuk won't be there. Also dont think Puljujarvi is a gamble, he is a sure thing top 6 winger next season.

If the Pens move Fleury and Kunitz, i would love to see GMJR call Shero and see if they can steal Palmeri away from the Devils. He is an absolute perfect fit into this system, and would look unbelievable on Sid's left wing.

I don't see any way we get into the top 6 unless they you're talking about Murray.

Nice blog.

If Letang stays healthy next year he could finally get a Norris Trophy. The kind of positive publicity he gets just from his play in the finals and that cup clinching goal are going to put him in the drivers seat for that type of recognition.

The MAF situation will be interesting. We have seen before how goaltending situations can change quickly...the guy you think is going to start stinks out the joint early in the season then someone else has to step in. Clearly Murray can play...but can he play a regular NHL season of 50+ starts and then be the guy in the playoffs too? Logic would say they need to be sure they have a good back-up for Murray if they decide to go with him. I am for moving MAF if they can get a chepaer back-up option and can use the money to make the team better at forward and or D.

Funny that buyouts start tomorrow and then the draft is next week.

And free agency begins on the 1st. I remember last years free agency day (also Canada Day). Few buddies thought it would be funny to sneak a sh!t load of cannabis oil into my bbq'd burger when I left it alone to go take a piss. 1.5 hours later I was completely out of it in my own world..couldn't talk to anyone...then the Kessel trade happened and my phone started blowing up from family and friends texting and calling me about it. I spent about 5 straight hours refreshing TSN stories on my phone glued to it while everyone else had a good time on the beach we were hanging out on.

I think some people are still a little high from winning the cup. Pens have essentially the same team coming back. Seriously doubt they will be making crazy moves to get the the 3rd or 6th pick. MAF will be the only major move and options are very limited so the return isn't going to make anyone jump out of their seats unfortunately.

Does anyone else get the changing of the guard feeling from this cup win?

Duper gone, at least in the player capacity.
Fleury gone. There is no way Fleury can stay, Murray won his job.
Kunitz done after next year.
Malkin? E4 guys.

The core went out on top though!

- stackthepads

the main part of the core is still there though in letang, crosby and malkin (malkin won't leave).

I would send fleury to calgary for a 2nd rounder and a good prospect. also make that 2nd rounder a conditional pick that turns into a first rounder if calgary makes it to the playoffs

This. Don't fix what isn't broke. The team will be almost exactly what it was last year. If you trade fleury and sign a competent backup (enroth type guy), you still have 3-4 mil in cap space (if cap stays the same). You could try to resign Schultzand pick up a depth player or 2. Hell, if you trade fleury you could even have enough cap room to make a run for a guy like okposo without losing anything. There's your Kunitz replacement

I think even getting calgary's pick would cost fleury, pouliot, sprong. The only chance at getting the #3 pick is if you could get calgary to trade the number 6 pick for soemthing like

Fleury + Pouliot + 2nd round pick

Wideman (salary dump for them) + #6 pick

#6 pick + sprong + 2nd

#3 pick

I'd do that deal from the pens perspective as I'd love to add a legitimate top line forward for the future that could replace one of Malkin/Crosby/Kessel. One of them will probably age poorly so it keeps you with 3 guys that can lead a line.

I'm not sure why everyone has the propensity to start considering Sprong trades. He ain't Kapanen yet (starting to stagnate in terms of development). Give the man his chance

So you just gave away a future HOF goalie, a good D prospect, a great F prospect and two 2nd rdrs for (frank)ing wideman and a1st just to draft 1 guy!
