Yeah for sure. I mean I'm not opposed to the idea, but I'm thinking they will likely want a young D prospect who is going to be an nhl player in return too. Given the market for D men right now, teams are going to have to throw together unbelievable packages to get top D men

That and I believe that Beleskey has a NMC as well, and he just signed in Boston, so I doubt that he would be willing to waive that NMC one season after he signed with the team. It's not impossible, but just something extra to keep in mind. I believe the NMC was only for the first 2 years of the deal as well.

There's all this talk about buying out Seidenberg this year... which might not be a terrible idea, but I would argue that Seidenberg still has more left in the tank than Chara does, and on a more team friendly cap deal as well. It seems to me like Seidenberg would be more of a casualty because of Chara than anything else.

It's like people are looking at Chara and saying, "Man he declined fast... we better get rid of Seidenberg before he does the same thing!" Yet we're sticking with the dude that has declined, and getting rid of a guy that could still be decent.

This whole situation is just loyalty to a fault. It pisses me off that Chara is just flat out untouchable, and not even up for discussion... simply because he's Chara.

Not untouchable....just extremely difficult. Here is how I view it.

First, you have to find a team that actually wants him. Perhaps one team does if Sweeney eats some salary. Perhaps he would do better in a significantly reduced role on a contender, but I honestly doubt a contender would take him at full salary.

Second, you have to deal with his NMC. Will he waive it? If I had to guess, I would say no.

Third you come to a buyout option. Here is what I pulled from General Fanager's recollection of the CBA

"there is no cap relief for contracts that start in a year where a player will be 35 or older as of June 30th of that year. All cap hits remain the same, but the buyout does offer salary savings to the team at the rate of 2/3 of the remaining salary owed, paid in equal annual amounts over twice the length remaining for the contract."

Here is what a buyout would look like for Chara.

http://www.generalfanager.com/buyouts/213

Now it offers some savings for next year and the year after, but the final thing to think about is this: Do Neely, Sweeney and Julien really want to get rid of Chara? Well, based on the moves made in recent years, I would also answer this with no

Then sign Stamkos to an 8 year, 95M contract.

Looks like we already missed out on Bickell too. he really would have made us "heavier" like we need to get.

Probably waiting for Vegas to have a team. Same with Danny Heatley. They need a new revenue stream for hookers and cocaine

Those are great points... I didn't feel like doing the legwork on the cap repercussions, so thanks for including that.

The way the "no cap relief" clause is written I wonder if that would apply to Chara... I think he signed the deal when he was 33/34? So I wonder if it wouldn't count because he was younger than 35 when the contract was signed. Or if that's just saying that if a player is over 35 in the year his contract would be bought out, then there's no cap relief.

Too many goddamn rules... either way.... draft day is less than 10 days away, things should get exciting pretty soon.

No kidding, I am not sure how the buyout process would work either. But I do hope the draft its a tad more exciting this year than it was last year.

I just think it's something to consider. The return plus the cap relief could really help the club. It's one of the few ways you're going to get a 1-2 defender other than the draft.

Good article on the buy out possibilities of Hayes and Seidenberg by Bean.

http://bigbadblog.weei.co...l-not-ruling-out-buyouts/

Don't see how it would really benefit us to be honest. Better off keeping them for a couple seasons or seeing if they can up there value so we could just unload them to someone else.

I think Seidenberg will be better than Chara next season. But who the hell knows anymore.

And go Springfield Thunderbirds!
