Malkin has said several times that he wanted to play out his contract in Pitts, then go to the KHL to finish his career. He loves the city, his parents love the city...the Pens love him, and he has zero issues being behind Sid. Its a perfect situation for Malkin, hell...he even makes more than Crosby I believe.

Yeah sorry I meant to say "some" people, namely the Pens fan who thought that was a fair deal

Really? Or maybe you have reading comprehension issues...

Asking a consensus if it's a fair deal and thinking it's fair are very different ideas. Just starting the conversation on what would be a good deal to send MAF to CGY.

If the Flames offered the 35th pick I wouldn't be too butt hurt. I dont know why everyone on here is so negative towards Calgary. I think they are an up and coming team that would be attractive to a guy like Fleury. All of the "contenders" don't have room for a guy like Fleury. I think Calgary is a great fit.

There are really only 3 places with clear, obvious goaltending vacancies that must be filled: Toronto, Carolina and Calgary. (There's some other places that could probably use Fleury but have too much money tied up in their goaltending already, so unless Pittsburgh took one of the high priced goalies back..) You have to also ask whether Fleury would be their first choice, or whether they'd rather go after Reimer in UFA or younger Andersen, or maybe even go after Bishop.

All 3 of these teams have early 2nds and the Leafs have a late 1st, any of those would probably get it done, maybe with another pick or B prospect thrown in if PIT is lucky. Pittsburgh would be wise to move on this at the draft if they can, before Reimer and probably Bishop (since extensions can be signed starting July 1) become available.

Of course it would also depend on how open Fleury is with the NMC. If he decides he wants to stay in the East, Pittsburgh's leverage is even less.

Right now I'm thinking Carolina is the most likely one.

If Pittsburgh started the conversation that way BT would hang up and not talk to them again for a week. Again, have you any idea how valuable Brodie actually is.

Same money different cap hit....doesn't matter though. Fact is, people have been playing the "Malkin wants to be the man" line since he was drafted. It's simply not true. In Pittsburgh he gets to be the man in the locker room, but doesn't have all of the media attention. A perfect situation for a fairly shy person with all world skill.

Again, this is why I'm asking, but instead of creating a cordial conversation, people on message boards love to just jump on people any chance they get.

I think that's a very fair deal. A late 1st/early second can help rebuild the defensive depth in the minors. A B prospect who plays D would be nice also. Plus, Pittsburgh sheds cap and can look at getting a LW for Crosby.

It's fair also because you consider that Talbot, a much less experienced but promising goalie, got a late 2nd and 3rd and Lehner, same mold as Talbot, got the 21st overall (slight overpay based on trading in-division I think); Fleury splits the difference between those two value-wise I think. Goalies generally don't get great returns in trades because there's only so many teams bidding for goalies at one time, it's not like a 3-4 d or 2nd line forward who will always have bidders.

Agreed. The one thing fleury actually does have going for him is that he appears to be getting better with age. He's still extremely athletic, but his positioning is much better. Whoever gets him will be getting a really good goalie for a decent amount of years.

Evidence Malkin wants out of Pittsburgh:

1) He truly evolved as a leader in the lockerroom this year and called the team and himself out on several occasions when they needed to be and always followed it up with a string of great performances. This clearly shows his frustration that Crosby wears the C instead of him.

2) He committed stay in Pittsburgh in the offseason in order to train up his durability so he doesn't miss large chunks of the season next year. It's not secret Malkin loves his country and loves to spend the offseason in Russia away from hockey. This clearly shows his commitment to the Pens has wavered.

3) He acted like a complete child last night after hoisting the Cup. He and Phil had the biggest smiles in the room. He was cursing up a storm and shoveling booze down his throat and when he was interview he said that he knows this won't be this team's last Cup. This shows that he's become completely indifferent to this team's success and no longer believes this is a good situation for him to succeed.

Everyone needs to stop dumping on Ek. He's clearly got this one right.

Fleury is going to be an interesting case. He has value but goalie returns are all about timing. Boston and Ottawa got first round picks for their goalies while NY got a 2nd & 3rd, Vancouver got a 3rd and everyone else got less.

If everything goes well and the NMC doesn't hinder the deal then Fleury should easily fetch a low first / high second plus another high pick or decent prospect / player.

The teams that could use a starting goalie are Calgary, Carolina, & Toronto. Others could use a change but are unlikely to make the move like Winnipeg and Vancouver.

Calgary can easily offer picks 35 & 54, Carolina has pick 21 if they are desperate enough, and Toronto has 30 & 57. I'd say Calgary and Carolina are closer to a playoff fight and are the best choices, if Fleury wants to go.

I meant, if he chooses where he wants to go with his NMC. I can't imagine he'll choose to stay in Pittsburgh but he could decide he wants to stay in the East or just block a trade to a particular city for whatever reason. If he does that obviously Pittsburgh's leverage gets even more limited.

It's another interesting option. I don't think Winnipeg would do it since they have Hellebuyck waiting to take over but I could see Vancouver. Obviously these teams would have to include their current overpriced goalie in the deal going back but still. I think Pittsburgh could absorb the short term cap hit and they can expose the goalie they get back in expansion (remember, you HAVE to expose an experienced one otherwise the NHL will penalize you).

Another interesting option - to Dallas for Lehtonen or Niemi (would probably have to be Lehtonen from Dallas' perspective). They could make it a 3rd and conditional 2nd, with the condition on the 2nd being if Lehtonen is taken in the expansion draft.

What's funny is that Malkin has never said he wanted to be "the guy". Hell, even Sid let's geno come on the ice last. Why on earth would someone want to be "the guy" on a loser team?
