Looking at the Flyers, I think Hextall is open to analytics. I think Hakstol is open to analytics. I have about as much comfort in them using everything at hand to get better as any tandem in the NHL. But their department does seem....a bit weak.
You surely know more than me about the wide world of analytics, though I consider myself versed enough in hockey stuff, but the only way these teams can reach that next level is to bring on those cutting edge statistical people. It feels like we are entering a point in the NHL at least, where EVERY team feels like they are on an equal playing field. Well, the good teams lol. I don't give a poop what Colorado does. There is almost no advantage anymore on that front, or shortly there will be none. Data crunching =/= data innovation. That's the next frontier. Teams like Arizona or Florida seem like they may be getting the jump. |

i do think it's not a coincidence that this is the best cleveland has looked offensively in this series.
it may end up costing them this game but i cant see it costing them the series.
i know curry gets all of the publicity but thompson is so pretty to watch play its sickening. |

So you'd only go 1 year with Gudas this offseason? - PhillySportsGuy
No, I'd go three. But if he wasn't playing up to the deal, expose him to the expansion draft and use the slot to protect MDZ or Morin. |

Agreed. THere's a lot more you can do with what we have. There will never be one universal number that defines a player. The NBA has things like WARP, RPM and PER, but even those are flawed. We'll eventually come up with better ways to represent specific aspects. Instead of using goals or shooting percentage to find the best shooters, we'll have a more detailed metric like shooting efficiency. |

The bottom line is, any tool that has potential should be considered. Balancing the tools is the key. Shot based metrics are no more misleading than using traditional stats. Everything is a piece of the pie. Scout the guy, watch his games, look at the traditional numbers, look at the advanced numbers.
At the very least, the advanced stats should carry as much weight as a scout saying, "He's a big SOB who will cross check a bastard across the teeth!" |

They replaced him with Livingston. They're literally playing a 4 guard lineup right now with a small forward. |

yeah. thats tough to sustain long term. and the trickle down effect is not having livingston to fill his normal role off of the bench. |

you'd know more than i would, but i didnt think barnes was that highly rated? i thought he was just a nice swing player, great as part of the team. but i didnt think it was understood that he was a stud in his own right.
wouldnt they need to make other changes as well to absorb durant besides simply just swapping out barnes?
do you think it would be worth it big picture overall? as ridiculously good as durant is, its at least worth examining if they'd just be better off sticking with what is working so well? |

barnes reportedly wants 20 mil a year minimum rather give durant 30 mil a year
it would be worth it in the big picture because that would give them a lot more size and another great scoring threat |
