I'll probably get some heat for saying this, but:

Hopefully Kruger. Terrible contract.

- CBHawks88

Yes, and no.

I think there's a good argument that Kruger's worth what he's being paid. Points be damned: being able to consistently flip the ice when starting 80-90% of your shifts in the defensive zone is a very valuable thing.

But unless somebody out there was prepared to pay $3m for Kruger to do that (and for all I know, there was), it sure looks like an above-market contract. Marginal differences like that matter a heck of a lot for a cap-ceiling team like the Blackhawks.

The contract extensions of Anisimov; Seabrook, and Kruger will add $3,925,000 to Chicago's cap hit that wasn't there this past season.

It's too bad to see TT go I think he will be a good player in this league already really good defensively with skating ability, if he trains and grows a bit he could really be a very nice player in his later 20's.

Cost of doing business in a hard cap league especially when you have Panarin waiting in the wings on his next contract.

Really thought we were going to have to buy Bickell out and now it looks like a Shaw contract is possible, probably another year away but it'll be interesting to see how this season shakes out.

For those quoting GeneralFanager's projection that the Hawks are at $60.9m commitments...they are missing the carry-over of Panarin's bonuses. About $2m. So $62.9.
- Cmonalready

Acutally it's 64.1 when you factor in Rundblad and Scuderi.

No lovefest for TT

He's a young player that people set high expectations of what he should be when he just has played @100gms in the league. And since he didn't meet certain peoples expectation of what they thought he should be at this point - instead of letting him develop, he's labeled as a bust

No problem with the move at all, they freed up 5mil in cap space (as well as the money freed up by moving Daley and Garbutt - which would be massive anchors if still here). Hopefully this will be able to extend Shaw, get some D help. Unfortunately they couldn't get CAR to take Gustafson as well

- PatShart

Isn't your hate for Gus the same as what other people thought of TT? Gus has only played 46 games in the league (counting playoffs). He was a rookie last year playing a much harder position than TT. Granted he has a lot of work to put in this offseason, I just think he has some potential to be a good bottom 4-6 dman on this team at a very cap friendly deal. It is just the dumb turnover in game 7 that lead to the game winner that sticks in peoples heads.

Quotes from Powers' article on the trade https://theathletic.com/2.../blackhawks-draft-story/:

Teravainen said he received a phone call from Bowman on Wednesday about the trade.

“[Bowman said] just thanks for everything, not much,” Teravainen said by phone from Finland. “It was a little shock for me, maybe I didn’t understand anything so. I never knew if it was a possibility, but you can’t know. I was not thinking anything else. I was just practicing here and working out here. Just things happen quickly sometimes. They have some problems with the cap. Something had to happen. It’s a lot of business.”

“Of course, it’s a little shock. You never know what’s going to happen. I’m excited. I try to take all the positives and go to the new team. I don’t know any of the players yet, but I think there’s a lot of good young players. Hopefully, I can fit in good there and get some good minutes.”

Teravianen was grateful for his time with the Blackhawks.

“Probably the best time of my life,” Teravainen said. “I won the Stanley Cup there. All the organization, all the players were so great to me. It was unbelievable to be a part of something like this. The fans and everything, unbelievable, especially winning the Stanley Cup, it’s something you dream about.”

Agreed, and a 14-16-81 3rd line isn't bad......assuming you have guys to skate with 19.

Has anyone checked to see if they took all sharp objects away from the folks over at 2nd city hockey.....they may need a counseling session after that trade. .....

Them, Cheer the Anthem, and Jay Zawaski were some of the biggest TT fan boys I've seen. Good riddance he is gone just not to hear people talk about how great the almighty Teuvo is.

Any real info on how much cap space is available now with how many spots to fill ?
- mrpaulish

Spots filled now:

Toews, Kane, Hossa, Panarin, AA, Kruger, Desi, Keith, Seabrook, Hammer, Kempny, TVR, Crawford, Darling, for $60,146,795.

Add:

$1,125,000 Scuderi
$2,500,000 Panarin bonus

That is $63,771,795.

New cap number minus $63,771,795 is what you have to fill one D spot (committee of current guys all under $800K) and five forward spots. Figure Panik in for $1MMish, so four forward spots to fill.

If you take the current cap f $71.4MM and the potential high end of $74.5MM, they will have about $7.6-10.7MM to sign five forwards.

I talked about the likelihood of a TT/Bickell deal going down this summer in my last interview on NHL Radio when Hawks were eliminated.

Bickell was an anchor, and the last resort was a buyout but beyond...
If TT wasn't going to be a top 6 forward here than he needed to go now.

Well, I sure timed my return well hope everyone is doing well!

Just thought i'd weigh in on Bickell and Teuvo. Bickell needed to go it's as simple as that. He was dead weight and his contract combined with his "play" was something that was handcuffing the Hawks. Teuvo is a high price to pay but in my opinion until we see what the Hawks next moves are I view the trade as neither good or bad.

Now the trade has been made what would you like to see next? Panarin signed long term? Shaw resigned? A big name FA (Okposo, Nielsen) signed? Defensive depth addressed (Campbell)? Or Jimmy Vesey and or Nick Schmaltz signing with the Hawks?

Glad to be back, peace everyone

Exactly. TT improved but is still soft. Once he puts on a little weight, he'll get some more confidence. I like the way he picked up his D game this year and his versatility on line 3 but never really saw him skate hard into the O-Zone. I think he'll do well in Carolina in a second line role. One where he could not play in Chicago. Good pick up for Carolina and good luck to 86 AND 29.

Hawks had no picks in this draft until the 3rd round. This now gives them pick #43.
While not a first round pick, it is still high enough that they should get some talent.

I guess thats the Vig to take a useless player and $4MM of cap space,

its the rangers second pick...pick 50

Ugh.

I don't agree with this deal.

But I think it shows how DOWN this organization has become about TT. I think we can connect some dots to things like "regression," "lack of willingness on and off the ice," and maybe they really feel he is never going to be a 2C. Wait, make that definitely.

Didn't think they'd do a good money after bad scenario. Maybe opens up room for Shaw and/or a left wing acquired separately. Could be more to come.

I will blog after 3 Central.

I'm kind of with you. This deal will depend what they actually do with that extra money. I'm still hoping for the CC move to free up more

Extend Panarin, sign Shaw, try to sign Campbell for D at team friendly deal. Try to get Schmaltz signed. No big name FA or we will be facing the same cap crisis.
