Alright – I think I figured this out. KG was misusing the term insurance, I think.

So, within players’ contracts, a clause exists that allows teams to stop paying a player if they get injured outside of hockey…e.g. on their personal time.

It’s not really clear, but I think for Horton a team could try to claim Horton’s condition didn’t exist at the time of the contract signing and was not a result of hockey. In theory, they can just stop paying him. Full cap relief would follow. Why haven’t the leafs done this? Douche-bag move to pull on someone with a medical condition? Sets a bad example for other free agents? Idk, but maybe the leafs try to do this whenr most of the contract has been paid out to Horton.

So, I think what KG is trying to say in his own special way: even though this is a non-hockey injury, because the blood clot issue is known, the leafs couldn’t do this to Stamkos, i.e. just stop paying him if the blood clot issue resurfaces.

They can always throw him on LTIR for the duration of the contract and get relief that way.

Tough call. It certainly is a Richard move. However, I can't seem them doing it later on in the contract because they would have already set a precedent. I think it would go to the lawyers and Horton would win.

Horton injury is hockey related, he wasn't injured on his own time snowmobiling or something.

How would the leafs do that to Horton though? How is it not a hockey injury.

And that's not what kg said at all.

Is horton's injury hockey related? I don't know if there is enough info to say.

Kg was all over the place misusing terms. This was the best i could piece together based on his incoherent ramblings.

I think it'd be concidered hockey related in the sense that it's not from outside (snowmobiling, parachuting, motorcycle, stock car racing)

I don't think that it is hockey related in that he was injured by a hit or something, but that it is an issue due to lifelong wear and tear of playing hockey.

Debatable.

What makes Trouba so much better than Tanev?

If Stamkos signs in Toronto, let me sum up July for you...

He is injured, his career is over.
He only scored goals in Tampa because of St. Louis.
They repeated the Kessel mistake.
They won't be able to afford their young talent.
He wont be able to perform in this media circus.
Matthews won't like being second fiddle.
They should have drafted Laine.

etc. etc..

On the other hand, if he signs in Detroit

He is ironman
He and Larkin are going to be magic
Perfect Datsyuk replacement
They finally got some young talent
He'll love being away from the media circus
Zetterberg will love not having to do 1st line duties
etc etc etc

Michael Augello: As pointed out by Ray Ferraro and Bryan Hayes on Stamkos, due to his blood clots, his next contract may not be insurable which would scare some teams away. It’s something that may not scare the Leafs away – see the trade for Nathan Horton.

At this point in time, yeah it may be close. Tanev is also 26 and Trouba is 22. I'll take the 22 year old any day all day if it's close. So much more development to go for Trouba and Tanev is basically just hitting his prime.

I Thought Trouba was going to be a beast after watching him at the world j's but the reality is he hasn't been very good since his rookie season. Only time I notice him watching jets games is when he's getting dangled. He's got Jack Johnson written all over him. All the physical tools with limited hockey sense.

No question I would take Trouba over Tanev given the choice, but I do get where the Canucks fans are coming from. Tanev is their guy and he is a pretty good Dman
