Can't cap escrow, since it's the mechanism that maintains the 50/50 split.

That's funny... the NBA has a capped escrow.

NBA has a soft cap, no?

Ehhhn... they still make the financial split even though escrow is capped and there is that returning signing rule that allows teams to exceed. The 9% escrow keeps that in check. Not a huge NBA fan but my friend is and he was getting into this last night with me because of all the crazy influx of money into the NBA and how it was effecting contracts over the last few seasons.

You'd think it would be easier to cap escrow with a hard salary cap. Just need a decent accountant.

I always thought the biggest drag on hockey's popularity was skating. All the other sports you just run around but for hockey you have to learn a specific skill just to start playing the game which is great if you live up north where there's free ice 5 months a year.

Anyone who's had a kid who plays hockey remembers the anguish of those kids learning how to skate. There aren't many who just roll out there and take off, there's a lot of coaxing and feet rubbing.

I think you're right.

I'm a terrible ice skater and the prospect of having to learn to ice skate discouraged my son. He went ice skating a couple of times and didn't like it. Offered to get him lessons and he didn't want them.

But he'll hang in the driveway and hit the orange ball into the taped-up Mylec net for hours.

My son hated it. I signed him up for lessons and he got through three of them and quit. I had one of my few bad parenting moments, over came it and got him inline skates for his birthday. That way he could learn at his own pace.

Why the hell didn't they get a cap on the escrow? That's their problem every year with the escalator. If they use it escrow goes up and everyone who's not a UFA or RFA are tripping little kids in anger.
- mayorofangrytown

It's not a perfect system for sure. No way to accurately predict things, such as HRR and the Canadian buck. Cap is set too high, it triggers higher escrow payments. What do the players want? If the cap is kept lower, that means lower escrow, but less money available in the pot for UFA's and RFA's. The player who already signed his long term big money deal votes no to the escalator, and pisses off his teammate who is a free agent.

Two things for me.

One being money, and anyone that says it isn't a rich man's game is kidding themselves. Many of us played hockey on the street when we were young, thats all fine. Its when you actually play on ice, on a team where money becomes an issue.

Second is culture. See it a lot up here, many immigrant families or the kids of said families don't really "know" hockey. Soccer is a pretty international sport that is known and played pretty much everywhere. Hockey is far from that. With the majority of immigrants that come to Canada being Asian or East Indian.

I have never been good at a sport that involves catching hah. Think they do that in cricket?

My favourite position in hockey is goalie, but damn if you try and shoot high.

Catching is super important in cricket, and only one guy out of 11 fielders gets to wear gloves. The rest of them have to catch a hard leather ball with bare hands.

I like lawn mowing. To me there's nothing more relaxing than sitting on your deck with a beer watching your wife mow the lawn. Toss in a quick nap and a cool breeze and you got yourself a day.

They started putting ads on the ice, that just makes it really annoying. Its not a game like hockey where the fast pace and large rink lets you mentally tune them out.

We played in elementary school gym class. Small Paint calls filled with cement and some sort of handle. Dear lord.

Pens are about to gut the Sharks in the Cup Finals and I'm not even that upset. You deserve credit for that, as does one other poster.

I play a great corner outfield if you are trying to assemble a pro team.
