I think you'd have to go the 8 skater route, because of Boychuk.
55, 3, 6, 2, 91, 29, 27, (I'm not so sure about the last spot).
I really think this will be an active offseason for the Isles, despite what everyone will say in response to this post. It's nearly impossible to predict who is going to be exposed before we know what the roster looks like on, at least, opening night. If we sign a big ticket free agent or two, we may have to protect them (because they'll likely have NMC clauses) and leave Lee and/or Nelson exposed.
What I think could be a "sleeper" move, would be signing Greiss to a mid-length, affordable deal before the season ends. If he has another strong year, this means the Vegas team is going to see a super-affordable goaltender signed for a reasonable term and, the hope is that, they'd pluck him and leave the rest of our team in tact. - eichiefs9
With the goalies that may be available I don't see Vegas caring about the isles goalies

Keyword is "may" and if Greiss is viewed as comparable to someone else out there but costs 1/3 as much..he may be the more attractive option. Let's not pretend that an expansion team is going to spend to the cap in their first year of existence. They'll be looking for value.
so you are attributing Pens success on Sullivan. I would think Crosby, Malkin, Kessell, Letang, Hornquist and Murray had a bit more to do with it.
Sullivan was coach of bruins and got fired in 2003. was assistant coach on 3 other teams, and then was interim coach when torts got fired in Vancouver only to fired himself at end of season. Come on.
Coaches only do so much. We can all hate cappy (which I agree he does lot of buffoon stuff) but he has done a good job. In fact his Coaching record is better than Sullivans. - Spartiarti
Pure coincidence that their success coincided with a coach being fired and a new one hired.

I’d have to think looking at our roster that the player taken in an expansion draft is going to be a defenseman. If we can only protect leddy and hamonic (boychuk will have to be protected with his no move) then pulock, dehaan, pelech, Mayfield all will be available.
I would have a hard time thinking an expansion team would look at our roster and pick greiss over pulock or dehaan if they were available.

Most teams do it, but most for only a short while. Columbus even turned it on a bit with Torts of all people. Had they not had such a poopty start and Bob not spent so much time down with injury they probably woulda been a .500 club. Players just needed to wake up is all, and for whatever reason canning the coach often seems to do just that.

Pulock won't be available. I'm not actually suggesting this...but if they were going to decide to leave him unprotected...they should just trade him.
I'd consider trading de Haan's RFA rights prior to the expansion draft. If Pelech is buried in the AHL most of the year and relatively unknown, let the Vegas team choose one of Hickey or someone else.

If we protect pulock we need to expose one of leddy/hamonic
If dehaan is traded we’re down to boychuk, leddy, hamonic, pulock, hickey, pelech, mayfield – and if we move pulock as well….
I think they’re going to have to go with the 8 skaters and a goalie to protect, this is the only way to protect 4 defensemen but that means we leave 3 extra forwards exposed.
This expansion draft is going to hurt, we’re not losing a bottom pairing d, we’re losing a top 4 or we’re losing a top six forward. If they had two expansion teams we’d really get boned.
I appreciate the league is trying to make the expansion teams more competitive, but why should the rest of the league have to lose a solid player to them? every other expansion team has come in and had to build up from scratch.

I can see them doing that to keep pelech and mayfield in the ahl playing top minutes. it doesn't do either of them any good to sit like donovan did. - Isles_since_6
The issue with these moves are the coach. Every year we add a "depth signing" or two and it gives our Coach a reason to sit guys who should play. he has been doing it forever.... No more depth signings. Let the kids play when someone gets hurt... b/c otherwise u get Reasoner, Mattau, Pando, Strait, Zidlicky, getting tons of minutes over kids that should be playing.

No argument that they're going to have to use 8 skaters, but I don't see it as such a dire situation, leaving three additional forwards unprotected.
Outside of 91, 29, 27, 18...what current forwards are so unbelievably important that we can't afford to lose? Nobody is touching Cizikas with that contract. Clutterbuck is probably about to play his final year in an Isles jersey, so they're not gonna touch him. If they took Bailey or Kulemin I'd probably throw an expensive party.
We'll have to wait and see who the new faces are next year, but as of right now...there aren't more than 4 forwards that I'd care about protecting anyway.

I hope they do. He is still only in his late 20's. I would be pissed if they let him walk after next year - Vukota
He's going to be 29 this November. Physical guys tend to fall apart quickly when it happens. I'd love to bring him back, but I'd understand the logic if they didn't. Clutterbuck could be looking for north of $4M when his time comes and if he is, I couldn't blame the Isles for not giving it to him.
Dear god, I have a feeling I'm going to open the floodgates with this comment.
