I think he would be. I don't believe Morin would need to be. Not sure about Hagg.

We'll see what happens this offseason. If Hexy goes out and signs a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman for multiple years, the Flyers may risk losing a decent player. If it were me, I'd protect

dmen
Ghost
MDZ (assuming he re-signs long term)
Gudas

Forwards
G
Voracek
Schenn(assuming he's still here)
Simmonds
Couturier
Raffl
Laughton

Goalie
Stolarz

Any players with 2 year of professional N.A. experience (AHL or NHL) is eligible. So, as of the end of next year, both Morin and Stolarz are eligible. That's the way I understand it.

Why does baseball do its draft in the middle of the season?
- jmatchett383

It is weird but once the college and high school season is over they want to get the kids drafted into the system. Also high school kids drafted will have to decide on college or going pro.

But hockey has the same thing issues. Same with basketball.

For the record, I am not wrong since I said I don't think so, and thinking is never wrong.

still think Flyers are drafting Bean....switch to Phils for a second and who are they drafting?

I want him so bad, unless Chrycern (sp!) falls, which I don't think he will.

Exactly.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning then. Unless there is some expansion rule, where pending UFA's don't need to be protected, and are not eligible for the expansion draft, the only way that makes sense, is if the Flyers wanted to move on from both players, and go in a different direction.

I'd already put Ghost ahead of Therien. Even if he never plays another game, he was a season-changer last year.

Does the expansion draft occur after the calendar year begins? What I'm wondering is how a player like Umberger would need to be protected despite being a pending FA AND Morin would have two full years of pro experience.

Basically, if the Calendar year ends, then Umberger should no longer be UC with the Flyers (This is assuming 2017 Umberger is still here). If he still is UC with the Flyers, then that means Morin hasn't technically completed at least two full seasons of pro hockey. He may have played in two full seasons, but the league year hasn't ended.

I've always assumed it is because that's when the college season ends and they can get the draftees on the farm clubs right away.

But I could very easily be wrong.

Most hockey and basketball seasons coincide with each other. High School and College baseball seasons start around March and end in June. Like J35 said, it gives high school kids an opportunity to make a decision on pro or college. It allows the players to get into the minors for a couple months as well.

Hockey and basketball seem to run together.

Since baseball is so long and goes into September it allows for them to get college drafted players into their systems and for high school kids to make a choice between college and pro.

Alos basketball kids in the draft are done with school if they stay in the draft. Hockey you can hold rights through college drafted players.

If a high school kids is drafted in baseball but go college baseball loses his rights and he needs to go to school for a certain time and re enter the draft.

Sorry, was thinking backwards.

They would both be eligible for the draft, but as UFAs. So the other team would be assuming risk if they picked either one, as they have no contract in place for the upcoming season and could explore FA.

Hmmm, that's a good question. One the one hand, you can't have it both ways. On the other hand, the NHL can't employ Pronger while he's still under contract with an NHL team, so....

I actually didn't think of that.

Things could still change too if Quebec City is announced. That would mean teams could lose two players.

RFA this year is interesting because if the cap stays the same, lots of teams will have to make some tough choices. I know QO isn't a huge deal but some teams need every nickel and dime to keep some important players.

Bleacher Report updated their mock draft after the combine. They have us taking Gauthier and someone quoted saying he's comparable to Rick Nash. That seems like a bit of a stretch.

I think most teams are done by early June with the exceptions being those teams in the college "world" series.

The championship game is June 29/30. So drafted players can get into a pro farm system and still have almost 2 and half months of pro ball.
