Lets take LA for example...
great team.. Maybe the best defencman in the league..
but.. they have greatly underachieved the past 2 years..
Their captain sucks, they are in cap trouble..
Id be more excited to be a Leafs fan than a Kings fan right now. |

My wife asked me the other day if the Leafs get the most attendance of all the teams. I told her no because other teams have more seats in their arena so they have a higher attendance. She asked me why the Leafs didn't have th most seating and I had no answer.
Why didn't they make the account 25k-30k seats a game? Any idea? - systemtool
Excellent question.
A couple of answers.
First, the ACC was originally only for basketball. At the time, the Raptors and the Leafs were separate corporate entities. In fact, at one time there were plans for two separate areas to be built at the same time. IIRC, there was even an announcement that the Leafs were going to build a new arena on the CNE grounds.
There were also plans for the Leafs to build an arena over top of the train tracks at Union Station - the grand hall of Union Station would serve as the entrance to the arena. That would have been interesting, to say the least.
So the Leafs didn't actually buy the Raptors until 1998, a year after construction of the Arena had begin.
There is also the story of Stavro touring the Bell Centre and stating that he hated how big it was, and vowing that the Leafs would never build something so big.
There's actually an economic argument to be made that by having a smaller arena, you artificially inflate ticket prices, so you aren't really losing any money. |

No seriously, cut this poop out.
We finished last in the league.
We've played 7 playoff games in the last decade, with no series wins.
We still have a middling defence, no goalie, and a giant handful of unprovens up front.
Please refrain from even suggesting that the Leafs are truly the envy of the league right now. - Atomic Wedgie
Agree on all your points, there is strong reasons for optimism though.
Goalie situation will be addressed you can bet on it. Lou was fortunate to have Brodeur - perhaps the best clutch goalie - no offence to Roy ever. Won cups with so-so teams because of Brodeur and rules that allowed players like Bob Gainey to be stars (......"and a great defensive spear, tackle made by Gainey on Marcel Dionne.") He also fished in Vancouver to trade Schneider for a pick.
The Coach Babcock in 13 NHL seasons as a head coach - for Anaheim, Detroit and Toronto has failed to make the playoffs exactly twice. Once with a very weak Duck team and last year with the rebuilding Leafs. I like his chances of being a playoff coach again soon - don't you?
The hardest nut will be improving the defense. With newer rules that allow smaller skilled players to flourish - do we need a big dominant number one? Unsure, but you have perhaps one of the best scouting staffs in the NHL now - no comparison to the bums that were employed by the previous regimes. That plus Lou and Jacques Lemaire, Dubas and Fletcher - make for a very solid management team that might be able to make a few decent trades in the near future.

But please tell Mrs. Toolsie that I've heard from a highly reputable source that a 40,000 seat arena may be coming to Toronto...

it's a lot easier to get back into the finals when you have a former cup winning core that isn't over the hill than it is to build a winner from scratch though.
we can all agree that the leafs are collecting some really good pieces but they are still totally unproven and things may or may not work out. it's good that you're excited and you should be but i think it's safe to assume most fans really aren't jealous lol. |

It's also in a spot in Montreal where ownership does not reap the big benefits of location. The Air Canada Centre with all the Maple Leaf Owned bars, restaurants etc Real Sports - take in lots of cash - is it more than an extra five thousand seats would bring. Possibly. Completely different animal.

Attendance figures on their own mean jack-squat.
Attendance X average ticket price = meaningful metric. |
