The Leafs and Tampa have already agreed to a trade for the rights of Steve Stamkos - deal is done and ink is dry. Not sure if he will be signed then formally traded or the Leafs will have the advantage with exclusive rights to speak with Stamkos pre FA.

This actually makes a lot of sense to me, especially the second part. Florida has no state personal income tax and the Bolts are the only team that can sign Stamkos to an 8 year deal. So, if the Bolts agree to take a $9m cap charge on an 8 year deal of $72m. it puts other clubs at a huge disadvantage. The problem is trying to match the net money while being limited to a 7 year deal. An equal net deal from any other team likely creates a $10.6m cap hit just to pay him the same money. A sign and trade with a max signing bonus makes a tremendous amount of sense.

You only need to protect players on non ELC contracts, right? Right now that would be Reilly, Kadri, JVR, Komorov, Nylander, Gardiner, Goalie.

Would derived what will happen with the Zaitsev kid.

Imagine being Vegas and picking over the leftovers on the Leafs, not a whole lot to work with there that's not protected, because the Leafs themselves already picked up a bunch of garbage to fill out their roster.

Indeed. We could end up losing a player like Connor Brown, but at least he'd get his fair shot at the NHL.

Unrelated, how high do you think packaging picks 30 & 31 could vault the Leafs in the draft? 15-20, 20-25?

It's amazing how Robidas said there was a knee injury, but no further detail at all. A knee injury is unexplained and never gets better. He's not even on LTIR either because they don't need it, just regular IR. Like they'd feel guilty about LTIR.

Buffalo won't need him when they steal Backes and Lucic from the rest of the league. We've had this discussion.

With all the Matthews & Marner hype where does that leave Nylander ? Is he third best prospect ( if you call him that ) behind those two or what do you guys think?

That would suck to lose Brown, I hadn't thought of a player like him.

As far as moving up, I don't really know. I can't think of enough examples of that kind of thing to get a sense of what the value is. It seems like it's pretty tough to break into the top 15-20...and then when you start to fall to the bottom of the first round and into the second, maybe it's not worth it to start moving up. The Leafs showed that philosophy last year, that they'd rather move down because the difference isn't worth it. I kind of want them to just take the 30 and 31 consecutively, like in Yahoo fantasy drafts.

Well, presumably behind Matthews as far as prospect pedigree and projections. He's shown he can play with men, Marner hasn't yet so that's up in the air.

I think that when 2 of those 3 haven't played North American Pro hockey yet, ranking them is like stepping in poop while placing the cart before the horse
