"According to a source with ties to the Players’ Association, the cap — set at $71.4 million this year — would be reduced to approximately $69.3M for 2016-17 unless the PA triggers the 5 percent escalator. If the union does exercise the bump, then the cap should increase to approximately $72.8M. The union, which debated the issue at meetings at the end of the week, has voted for the increase all but once."

Definitely going to put teams in a bind. But players need to remember the cap has gone up by 45% over the last 8 seasons and voting for the escalator puts more money in escrow, which probably risks more of their money long term then just accepting the cap how it is.

It's not so much that they are claiming to lose money, it's that revenue didn't increase over last year. League is profitable, just not as profitable. Zero Canadian playoff teams doesn't help.

Would Canadian playoff teams helped THAT much though considering their playoff revenue would've been in Canadian dollars?

You would think a company like the NHL would purchase currency options to hedge against exchange rate volatility.

Merchandise, ticket sales (not giveaways to inflate attendance) and those sorts of things all impact league revenue. Have to think a series or two in Montreal generates a hell of a lot more revenue then one in Nashville or Miami.

Plus let's face it, the Canadian teams sucked for most of the years. Do you buy a Kadri jersey when the team blows? Imagine the impact on revenue it will have just with the Matthews jerseys in Toronto after the draft.

Wasn't TV viewing numbers down way over 50% this postseason? I think that would help man.
