That is just a luxury though...They dont have to move anyone and they shouldnt be limited in free agency because of it. (I say shouldnt because I dont think Hextall cares about the big fish). We talk about trading Read and Streit, but we havent really seen much indication that the Flyers feel the same way

True, though the way Hexy plays things close to the vest, I doubt we'll hear anything until a deal is made.

Oh I definitely agree with that...It just seems like, with Streit in particular, the Flyers value his vet presence much more than we care about. Trading Streit is great in theory, but that value could be worth more than whatever they might be getting elsewhere. Really its just a gigantic difference from last offseason

Where are people expecting Bleackley to go? Could he be an option at 18?
- hereticpride

What is the feeling in the room about Julien Gauthier? Will he be available when we pick? If he is, would you?

Can our resident draft experts shed some light? He seems like just what we need, a big strong kid with good hands who can score and reportedly can fly for a big man.

Thoughts?

As much as they value Streit's vet presence, with Ghost running the top pp unit, his value to the team has been decreased. I'm guessing, if they can find a trading partner, he will moved. Hopefully, Schultz can fill the role of veteran mentor to the kids.

He could be there and I'd be happy with him at 18 but I could also see him going as high as 12 o13 to someone. Might need to move up.

The middle of this 1st round is looking very tough to gauge.

I like him, some folks think he is overrated, but, from the clips I've seen, he seems to skate very well for a big man and he has a very heavy shot. Considering that they could really use more size up front and a true sniper, he would seem to be a good fit for us.

The tools are considerable... it's concerning that he hasn't done more with them. That's why despite being an old-school scout's wet dream, he's ranked relatively low by a number of services.

I prefer Max Jones. He impressed me at the MC.

The prevailing knock seems to be that he doesn't pass the puck well, or often enough. I have no problem with that since we don't have a pressing need for another passer in this lineup. I want someone who can get to the net and create havoc.

A John Leclair type upside. (and no, I am not saying he will be John Leclair)

Nice, they seem to be ranked at around the same place. Not quite as big as King Julien but close enough. I like your thought process and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Have a feeling Jones could go pretty high... he's also an old-school scout's wet dream... all size, truculence, speed and shot.

MacDonald can also be a veteran mentor for the kids if Streit leaves.

It Streit stays he may find himself in the AHL to start the season again, possibly on a pairing with Sanheim.

I agree, they could badly use a shoot first mentality type in their top 6.

Yeah, I just realized what he meant.

A lot is going to depend on how the kids look come fall. MDZ, Gudas (when he gets re-signed), Ghost and Schultz are locks for opening night. If Streit is still here, then add him to the list. That gives them one spot, plus the 7th man, and the 7th won't be a kid.

Clayton Keller, Tyler Jost, Jake Bean and Logan Brown seem to be the 'special' players to me outside of the top-3.

Interesting. The 41 goals and 16 assists definitely say something about the type of player he is. But there is something about that size, skill, and speed combo that is intriguing. Plus they say he likes to hit and fore check.

Maybe that low ranking becomes a blessing in disguise for us.

I find that a player who is big and also enjoys playing physical has a better chance of advancing up the ranks. Its the ones who dont have a physical game that sometimes give me pause....as if they don't want to do what it takes when the players start getting better....

I definitely agree with you on having other vet presences, I just got the feeling from Bills blogs that they clearly see Streit as the leader on defense and a valuable voice in the locker room. Obviously things change.

Brings up an interesting point though...you said Schultz is a lock. Did we just assume he is good now because he got hit with a bunch of ovechkin slapshots? I agree that he stepped up in the playoffs, but I dont think a season of Streit is worse than a season of Schultz.

It is definitely Streits skillset that makes him expendable over a guy like Schultz, but I dont think we need to have a certain number of defensive guys and certain number of offensive.

When it comes down to it...there are 10 teams Streit can allow the Flyers to trade him to. That along with his cap hit is going to make it difficult

I think they consider Schultz a mainstay on the PK, and he has a much more manageable cap hit than Streit. With that in mind, I'd be pretty surprised if he wasn't here at the start of next season.

I think it's interesting how low Schultz's ice time was against Washington. Obviously Hakstol trusted him to start every game, but over the season he didn't play huge minutes and his ice time went down in the playoffs. So it could be another Grossmann situation where they thank him for his service, and move on.
