No black light in that room.
Looks just like that Crosby poster next to Pierre's bed.
Under black light I'll bet it looks like a Jackson Pollack painting.

During the scrum leading to the Crosby/Giroux fight, he gave some "excuse me" jabs to Voracek while turning his back and skating away. I have no problem with him punching Jake, but don't run away and act like it was an accident. |

I would die defending Coots, but to be fair, those goals have a lot in common: tons of time and space, no real back pressure. He has a solid shot, but so do pretty much all NHL'ers. He needs to work on getting space and driving the net more to use his shot. That he has a good shot is all fine and dandy, but if you really want to score goals in this league, you need to be able to use it. And that's easier said than done. Keeping on working on his first step speed will help that. His speed is fine, though he will never be confused as a burner. His acceleration still needs something. It often causes him to just stop moving his feet when on the puck in the o zone.
I'd like to see him move his feet on the puck more, have a bit aggressive predatory mentality, be a touch more of a risk taker with his plays. Being a cycle monster is great, but sometimes you have to be the guy who makes the play. I'd like to see this more. |

Part II: Most underrated part of Coots's game: the passing. It's always flat, hard, and on the tape. He rarely misses and has very good vision for a big. He has a touch of Getzlaf/Thornton in him. He just needs to opt for the high risk play at times, like I said. Instead of the safe pass/play, make the skilled one every once in a while. His confidence means everything.
One minor thing: I thought he actually started to show it at the end of last year and into the WCs. I don't think you mentioned this Bill, but it is apt dealing with his confidence: carrying the puck in. He has never done it more. That's where the slow myth dies...he is one of the best on the team at carry ins through the NZ. It's funny, the PP2 actually revolves around HIM skating the puck in a la G or Jake. And it works.....confidence. |

In my opinion we have seen....for the entire length of his career. Speed has never been a concern for me. For one thing, I don't think he is slow. I have never seen him be a step behind on any play where speed would be the factor which caused it to happen, and for another, I think his long stride makes him look slower than he actually is. - MBFlyerfan
Agreed. When it comes to the current crop of Flyers forwards, he's the least of my worries.

In my opinion, on the forecheck, Couturier is a very aggressive and physical player. I really believe that any hesitation with the puck, is a confidence issue, that I think will eventually improve. |

skippy, jsaq, tangent... there's a lot of people who were the back bone of this thread in the summer and drove a lot of conversation and even more non sense.
I enjoy the summer postings... not as hectic, a bit more patch work, plenty of room for off topic greatness.
It's going to be odd around here this off season if a bunch of these people bail for real instead of just taking self imposed breaks.

His skating is fine after the first few steps, once he builds up a head of steam he's good to go. He is very strong on the puck, and makes good decisions in all 3 zones, which is something that is very hard to teach. As many have pointed out, I just think that he's concentrated so hard on being a shut down guy, that he's let his offense lapse. Playing him with Voracek and maybe, if they can find one, a true sniper, would greatly help.
In my opinion, he's the best all around player on the team and his loss against the Caps eliminated any chance of the Flyers pulling off an upset. The only thing I'd like to see from him going forward is to spend a bit more time in the gym this summer with the goal of increasing his upper body strength. Adding just 5-10 pounds of upper body muscle could do wonders and shouldn't slow him down at all.
