And it still leaves the Oilers without a proven top pairing defenceman. Another gamble isn't something they need, they need a sure thing. Should Set be a lock to be a top pairing guy? Sure, but things don't always go as expected. Forget Jones and go after someone about 3 years older and proven. Over pay if they have to.

Without Hamonic on the market, is there actually a proven top pairing player available anymore?

No on moves proven guarantees at top pairing Dmen unless they're on their way out of that distinction due to age or injury. I can't believe I have to say this, but the bottom line is the Oilers simply need better Dmen.

Even if the two they get are "just" second pairing guys, that's a big step up from what they had. Guys like Demers, Savard, Stone, Vatanen, Barrie, Shattenkirk, Goligoski, Despres, and Severson. All are varying levels of available but could likely be had. Throw two of them (or others of that level) onto our D corps and sure, it's not perfect, but it's a big step ahead of where it was this year. An injury to Klefbom wouldn't sink a blueline of:

Klefbom- Demers
Sekera- Stone/Savard
Davidson- Fayne
Pardy and a guy like Postma as #7 and #8
Nurse, Reinhart, and Oesterle in the AHL

That's at least a moderately competitive blueline. Ideally, Fayne's cap hit wouldn't be around, but at the end of the day, he's a functional #4 or #5 when paired with Sekera or Davidson.

Before The Great Purge, we used to crush comments. Every post was 600+ and sometimes 1000+.

However, the temptation to post inappropriate GIFs was too great. It's a story I relish telling my unborn grandchildren about one day.

Oh I recall. Some averaged a good 200 comments an hour for 10 plus hours. Lost a lot of good raccoons over the year.

Shattenkirk isnt going anywhere for dirt cheap, but I think to give up Nurse the Oilers would need more than just 1 year of Shattenkirk.

The Oilers would be dumb enough to do this, that's for sure. Only team dumber would be the Canucks, offering up Horvat and a 3rd

Jones would have to agree to sign said offer sheet. People always forget its up to the player its up to the player to sign first then the team to agree or match or let go. I bet there is alot more offer sheet offers that dont make it out to the public

Shattenkirk is no guarantee to stay in Edmonton. Nurse is no guarantee to turn into a top end defenseman. Both teams take risks.

The risk for Edmonton is greater unless there's a new deal in place for KS. If it's a sign and trade then I concede it's a possibility. If it's a deal for a pending UFA then I'm not sure you are going to get anything back like Nurse from any team.

I agree.

Something involving Barrie for nurse seems like a much closer trade off of risks. Lots more control with an rfa.
