Turns out Steen was again playing hurt. Greatnolayer when healthy but that seems to be an issue. |

I think it is more. I think there are a number of teams with cap space that would over pay for him like we did Stastny. So somewhere between that extreme and what his cap value would optimally be for the Blues.
He is six million plus a little more, not quite $6.5 but about there. The years is the killer part. Because on one of these contracts often the player is paid his current value by paying higher for the years he offers significantly lesser value.
His heart and soul and defensive game pushes his value $1-2 million above his offensive output value and usually people tend to tie offensive numbers to contract value because it appears easier to do. |

Who wuld you rather have? Backes, Brouwer or Lucic and why? Consider cap hit in your explanation. |

Brouwer for me. Lower cost, and I like what he brings to our power play. |

This is actually a tough call for me.
Backes (32) is probably a $6m cap hit player, but he plays in all situations and takes face offs at a 52% clip.
Brouwer (31) is going to make just under that, $5m - $5.5 and showed a nice offensive flourish this year. The question is, is this an anomaly or his real game? Additionally, he plays wing, which is not a hard position to fill.
Lucic (27) will probably get $4m -$5m on the open market, is tough to play against and has decent hands. Not sure if he plays in all situations. He's at his best with a skilled playmaker. Would he fit on a line with Lehtera and Tarasenko?
I hate Lucic, but for the money, he could provide a modicum of protection for Tarasenko while contributing offensively. I worry about his hot head...
Assuming we are out of the market for Backes, I might take a flyer on Lucic due to the cap implications.
No, I'd stick with Brouwer. He understands the team chemistry, he's durable, and has proven that he can be a leader for this team. Pay the man if you can get him to take a 3-year deal. |

Suggested retail price for Lucic looks like anout $7 million no less than $6 million. I think he was just making $6.5 this year.
Backes has a bit more value to the Blues imho. His versatility is a plus. I thought Brouwer used to play center but I might be way off on that. I seem to remember talk of him possibly playing center and pushing Backes to the wing. But I might be misremembering.
In a sense which post season scoring was an abberation: Backes or Brouwer, both or neither? If they do not score in the post season whose value goes up?
Tough one to be sure. Brouwer also has a hot head and takes stupid penalties. But that edgenin a game tends to back opponents off a bit. Lucic certainly has earned a reputation for being especially nasty.
Cap looks to be static. So value is huge. Lucic will cost about the price of two good players or two young really good olayers on the rise. The other part would be term.
I think term is going to big the biggest issue with any deal with a guy entering his thirties. The P-D thinks the Blues should extend Steen. But he has to take a pay cut in my book. Making him a valuable trade piece in my book.
If it were ever possible I would take the top pick for Vlad. I doubt it is possible. |

So an update to the Netflix / Amazon Prime schedule of events:
I completed watching the entire series of The Wire. It was great. Loved it.
I've also completed all but the final season of Boardwalk Empire. It's dragging a bit. I'll be waiting until the final season is free on Prime.
Started watching the second season of Bloodline on Netflix and I just started watching from the beginning The Americans. I hear that's a great show.
I'm looking to fill out my calendar following these, suggestions welcome.

That's because Boston ate some of his salary - .....
Thanks for that heads up.
That puts him at $6m on the current contract. His scoring has gone down. I would hope that he isn't making $7m/ year for lower scoring and bad decision making... |

I can't remember if Louie came up in our discussions. Fantastic show, not only for the humor but the transition in mood and story telling. Brilliant series. |

I loved the Wire. Got to meet one of the actors when he was traveling to different bases and doing Shakespeare for the injured troops.
The Wire might be one of the most complete shows out there.
I also just started binge watching th Americans. I am enjoying it about half way through the second season.
My gf did not like Boardwalk, so I had stopped watching it after like the third season.
I stopped doing Netflix when the CEO made comments about his loyal customers when they were trying to divide the dvd/digital parts and charge more. He later appologized but the appology came after a significant amount of customers dropped him.
My internet which is satellite has gotten much better. If only I could watch hockey on it I would drop Dish. Might drop them anyway. Depends on if the gf continues on or we split.
While doing a lot of research on climate change for an environmental science degree I found that anthropgenic climate change being driven by human produced CO2 was not in any way scientifically proven despite the media, politicians and a supposed consensus of scientists claim(recall one such consensus of scientists in America once believed in eugenics and funded the Germans prior to WWII, and California led the way). So I decided that such a degree could run into trouble in the future and it is hard to deal with certain papers because some aspects of renewable energies are very hard to find in peer reviewed journals I have switched to accounting.
I will say this the energy sector is a big scam imho. The two largest investors on the one hand will argue for free trade and capitalism and on the other hand they use the political system to insure their investments through numerous forms of subsidies at the federal, state and local levels so that they end up without any virtual risks on their investments.
Farm work continues on here and I have so far produce quite a bit of food. I am near food independence, where I will produce all my food except for sugar, salt, pepper and coffee. Though I could do that by replacing coffee with chicory and after I add bees replacing sugar with honey. |

Any thoughts on assistant coaches/ AHL coaching vacancy fills?
I'd love to see Oates and Yeo come together as Offense and Defense coaches. It would also create an interesting push/ pull for the head coaching vacancy in 2017.
I would think Oates would get the most out of Lehtera, Tarasenko, Fabbri, and Schwartz.
Yeo is a very structure-minded coach, like Hitch.
Thoughts? |

I read Bill Metzler's piece he did a short time ago about Craig Berube. Saying he thought he deserved another NHL head coaching shot.
His results with the Flyers team he had was actually pretty similar to what Haskol was able to get out of them.
He noted his biggest flaw might have been not reading his goaltenders better - so that's a red flag when you have a two goalie system.
Aside from that I don't know much about him. I didn't think Mike Yeo was a bad head coach either. I'm not sure about Oates. |
