The Bolts are a better team than the Isles and reached the Conference Finals without him. With him they are Cup contender. Gives them more incentive to keep him, although I agree they need to be creative to fit him under the Cap. But if I'm Stamkos, I'd rather play with a more complete team like the Bolts. - JohnScammo
They would have to make miracles happen to get him under the cap this year. Or let about half of their team depth go between 7/1/16 and 7/1/17.
They can't possibly keep him, Hedman, Drouin, Kucherov, Johnson, and Palat unless Stamkos takes a massive (and I mean massive hometown discount. He already turned down $9M/yr, so I think the writing is on the wall there.
But yes, cap situation aside...Tampa is, of course, a more desirable destination for him. But I'm operating under the assumption that there won't be any wildcard scenarios here and he's going to UFA. |

I don't think Buyouts help you on Cap anymore so you will see less of it.. why buy someone out if you don't gain cap space? You lose their production for no reason.
I have said this already but I could see a Vanek for Ok rights trade happening. (Min will throw in a 4th or something). - niteislander
Buyouts today count against the cap for a specific term, so Vanek's 1yr left would be minimal at best against the cap for Minn
Plus why would Snow want back Vanek at 1yr $7.5m? When finally the team is in a better position of attracting FA's
idk what happened but sorry for bold |

Buyouts do help. You pay 2/3 of the contract over double the term, for a player 26yo or older.
For example, if we bought out Grabovski this is how it would look:

Also if you're the bolts it's better to lose Stamkos and keep everyone else as they made it within one game of the finals without him. If you sign him and lose three or four other guys cause you don't have the space then you don't have the pieces to win anyhow

Exactly, without Stamkos they still have incredible depth. The emergence of Drouin as a force in the playoffs is only going to make them better in the regular season going forward.
If I were them and Stamkos rejected my last contract offer, I'd thank him, wish him the best and move on. No reason to mortgage the entire future just for him. Going forward, I think Hedman will be equally, or more, valuable than Stamkos anyway. |

Yea drouins playoff performance may have sealed the deal on stammer. If he can produce on his contract you let stammer go and if he gives you say 2/3s of Stamkos points it's a win because he's a top 6.guy and you control his rights and he allows you to keep the team intact. |

stop shouting at me....
the buyouts was in response to saying they would buy out Pom and Vanek. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I think Minn wants OK instead of Vanek and OK wants to go back home. So They would take the 7.5 saving on Vanek and spend it on a contract for Ok...longer term obviously.
We would get the wing JT needs... and it's only a 1 year try out for him.. again on JT's wing.
This would not stop them from going after Stamkos or anyone else they are targeting. It would probably move them along on making a cap relief trade like moving Bailey, Halak or Kulemin. |

Vanek & Pommer buyout

besides the 17/18 season on Pommerville, Wild would save a bunch on those 2

Also, he's now 32 years old. Not over the hill, but probably not far from it... And didn't he have some shady dealings? Gambling debts or something? |

For $7.5m no way, rather have Eriksson who can play defense and maybe cheaper... |

They did play well but idw him back here I'd rather jvr Killorn or Carter. Man I hated Vanek his attitude sucked and so did his work ethic plus he said he wanted his family at home games and Brooklyn was to hard for them to commute to.

I got into it with him once over something regarding Hamonic. He couldn't accept polite, well-thought-out criticism of his blog and got all bent out of shape about it. |

The fact that we're willing to sign him?
You're assuming that the Lightning even have the cap space to fit him and the willingness to accept that they'll likely lose a ton of depth, in probably two of Kucherov, Johnson, and Palat, and then some. Not to mention how much they'll have to pony up the following season to pay Hedman in a walk year.
It's not out of the question, but it seems unlikely they're willing to mortgage their entire team to sign him. - eichiefs9
I hear what you're saying. I wish it was a decent chance/probability that he would choose the Isles. We SHOULD be a serious contending team at this point, with all the horrible years behind us and a new arena but sad truth is that Garth hasn't been able to accomplish this. Yes, Tampa has a problem with their cap space but isn't it more likely they move other players to be able to keep him? They have the whole Summer to sign him and get under the cap and you have to think they will keep the franchise player at the expense of others. I would bet Callahan is one player they look to move for picks & prospects as his salary alone offsets most of the difference in the raise SS will likely receive. |
