I don't think MIN can afford him. They already have so much money tied up in a few atrocious contracts. - eichiefs9
They're dumb enough to figure out, Vanek is certain to be bought out and maybe Pommerville too |

What makes you think it's certain? That's a ton of money to buy out and have as dead space on the cap. They're better off just letting Vanek suck it up for one more season and then ridding themselves of him all together. |

See above. Blackhawks were literally dead-last in the league in total hits. - eichiefs9
They're too busy scoring goals |

That's what I've read plus his buy-out of 1yr wouldn't be such a detriment of a cap hit...
if Minn is not able to trade him or possible others for cap space |

I can see Okposo & Martin signing with the Devils. They have tons of cap space and those two could still stay pretty much local |

Never heard that term before? It's basically used to describe the guys in the league that score more goals than they have assists.
Brandon Pirri is the most recent one I can think of, season before this one. 22g, 2a. - eichiefs9

So if you figure $17.2M in cap space before signing anyone...and Snow can ship out Halak, that brings it to $21.45M. I don't understand all the inner-workings of LTIR...but for the sake of simplicity we will say that if Grabo gets LTIR'd that's another $5M, which brings the total space up to $26.45M. Dump Bailey that brings us to $29.75M.
If you add Cizikas ($2.5M per), Strome ($1.25M per), Prince ($950k) that's $4.7M added. Brings cap space down to about $25.25M. Mayfield figures to be the 7th defenseman next year and needs a contract. Figure he gets a small raise from $925K to $950k. That takes it down to $24.3M. Berube should get a small bump to about $850K. Cap space now at $23.45M.
This assumes Martin, Nielsen, Okposo all walk.
Halmo takes 4th LW spot, he's a Group VI UFA and needs a contract. His NHL cap hit is $875k right now, figure it would stay the same.
Snow signs Stamkos at an AAV of $11M.
Snow signs Eriksson at an AAV of $6M
That still leaves us with well over $5M in cap space, while simultaneously filling every hole created by the departure of the 3 UFA's.
Not saying this is what I want or that it will happen, just goes to show you what can be done with some creative accounting work.
edit: this is one ugly looking post. sorry - eichiefs9
This isn't fantasy hockey. It doesn't matter if we have the cap space. He's NOT coming here. Can't believe you guys are still discussing/arguing this like there's any life to the possibility. We are not yet a contending team. NOT even with Stamkos. Friendships mean squat otherwise Moulson would have stayed for less and KO would be re-signed already. We don't even have two proven wingers for Tavares—let alone two more that could play on a line with Stamkos. On top of that, Florida taxes are better than NY taxes, so even if he passes on what Toronto will offer, what's the incentive to choose Isles over Bolts? |

Good point. Florida has no State income tax. |

Bolts have to sign other players also, which is why maybe Bolts may not resign him or will have to trade some players away.
But there's no incentive..... |

Nope. Bear is sometimes used as code for the North's more "burly" ladies. Eichiefs can hunt them too if he wants, but he'll be hunting that dangerous game solo. |

The fact that we're willing to sign him?
You're assuming that the Lightning even have the cap space to fit him and the willingness to accept that they'll likely lose a ton of depth, in probably two of Kucherov, Johnson, and Palat, and then some. Not to mention how much they'll have to pony up the following season to pay Hedman in a walk year.
It's not out of the question, but it seems unlikely they're willing to mortgage their entire team to sign him. |

The Bolts are a better team than the Isles and reached the Conference Finals without him. With him they are Cup contender. Gives them more incentive to keep him, although I agree they need to be creative to fit him under the Cap. But if I'm Stamkos, I'd rather play with a more complete team like the Bolts. |

Well when guys like Compton and friedman mention it more than once theres a possibility it's not like it's just isles fans saying it these are reputable guys. New York doesn't have the pressure of Toronto and they are way closer to being a contender than Toronto. If Lee strome or Nelson have bounce back years after sophomore slumps the isles have the wingers for the top 2 lines. Now if this were 3 years ago I'd agree they have no shot but I think they are going to at least get in the mix for him and don't forget the new owners want to make a statement and what better statement is there that this franchise is for real than stamkos. |

I don't think Buyouts help you on Cap anymore so you will see less of it.. why buy someone out if you don't gain cap space? You lose their production for no reason.
I have said this already but I could see a Vanek for Ok rights trade happening. (Min will throw in a 4th or something). |

Nobody would disagree but if they can find takers for Carle/Callahan/Filpulla and manage to pay Stamkos/Kucherov/Killorn this year & Hedman/Palat/Johnson next year then by all means go luck to Stevie Y |
