3 x $5.29m
Never a fan of Howard, nor does he fit the team... Pass - As_I_See_It
He'd be like a throwback. Overpriced, average (well slightly below average) play. The Dion Phaneuf of goalies. |

I agree, some size needs to be added to this group. As far as goaltending, it's going to be added at the draft. It has to. It's anyone's guess as to who tho. I don't think I can watch another full year of bernier.. - Reeder30
there are many who are understandably excited for the make-up of the team come fall...
1) with the promise of the kids - at a minimum we should see Matthews, Brown, Nylander and Hyman
2) could also be Marner, Leivoand Soshkinov up front
3) Carrick gets added to Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev and Marincin
4) JvR should be motivated
and
5) possibility of Stamkos.....
Now ... with all that positivity and the excitement it brings (and in experience) - what does the team need MORE than any one other thing
a) stable goaltending situation
there's no way the Lou and Babcock WANT to ice a team with "Mandela Sieve".... and there's no way that Shanahan wants to have the aura(read stench) that Bernier brings while it has the chance to trend upward - particularly during the centenial year.
so - if Bernier's back - it means that they are tanking again this coming year - plain and simple - and I'm pretty sure that this would be Babcock's last choice.
I would guess that Lou will take steps to add an experienced guy if inexpensive on short term deal and add perhaps one or two question marks - such as the Finnish goalie from the IIHF worlds - Mikko Koskinen, might be an option; additionally taking a chance on Jimmy Howard or MA Fleury while helping out other team's CAP situations may prove beneficial while not costing "too much" ... where coming back with Bernier behind such an inexperienced roster would be a complete confidence killer.
Of course - a better choice would be paying the price to acquire a goalie - perhaps from Anaheim or Dallas or Tampa. But those could prove VERY expensive. |

Marner was drafted from the CHL, he has to stay there or play in the NHL. That's the only 2 options. No AHL, no Europe, no NCAA. - NewfoundLeafer
I wonder if Marner "could chose" to go play in Europe - like Matthews did? Clearly he can't play in the AHL due to the current rules. |

Jimmy Howard fits the Leafs model nicely. - datswho
so Bernier to Detroit....
Howard to Toronto - with $1.29M retained for all 3 years & a 3rd round pick.
(that's the 3rd round pick compensation for Babcock)
Leafs doing Wings a big CAP favor. |

He can't. The CHL is kind of a Richard league. They'll convince kids who are deciding between the CHL or NCAA to play a few games for the team that drafted them at the end of the season prior to their rookie year, knowing full well that excludes them from playing in the NCAA and only allows them to play for the CHL based on how the contracts are structured. |

It's the ncaa that doesn't allow players who played in the chl to then play in the ncaa.
If the kids are still unsure about witch direction they are going they shouldn't be playing those games, and if they didn't know the rules then shame on them. |

If you say so. The way I heard it explained made it sound like it was the CHL. Maybe I heard it wrong, but it's still a Richard move. And yes the kid, the parents or the agent should know about the rule. |

I was up early and it was dead in here so I went roaming to other threads. Jesus christ what is wrong with Canucks fans? Half their thread is discussing what the Leafs have done or what they'll do. I really believe theyre obsessed.
I've also noticed that Torontos rebuild only ever gets compared to the Oilers. Never compared to a successful one. Such paranoia and hate.
It kind of makes me hard to be so hated yet so obsessed over. Think ill go rub this one out. |

NCAA rules. They consider the chl a professional league and the ncaa doesn't allow its athletes to be a professional at their sport before or during their schooling. They could chose to change the rule to exclude the chl from being classified as professional and allow those players that played only a handful of games to be able to go to ncaa, but as of now it's an ncaa rule that prevents those guys from going ncaa. |

All they do is talk about the leafs, but they don't care about about the leafs and get the leafs shoved down their throats repeatedly.

OK, so it's an NCAA rule. Someone should still tell the kid playing a game in the CHL voids his chance at playing NCAA. It's a pretty big decision to make without all of the facts. |

No he can't play for a European team, what can be done and a option that is a possibility, is he does training camp with the Leafs, plays a number of games, gets loaned to Team Canada and comes back and finishes the season with the Leafs.

You know? I've noticed that. It's like the Oilers are the only team that has built through high draft picks ever, it's hilarious. No one ever mentions, let's see...the Hawks, Kings, Penguins, Tampa Bay, I'd put Florida in their now, etc....the Oilers are the exception that proves the rule. |

That is true. People have written about that scenario, and the examples of that happening haven't turned out well. |

I remember when I first started frequenting this place, oh around the time Van was an elite contender, there was a regular cast of Vans in here every day, chirping like it was a career. A few other usual suspects from other teams as well. Funny how the usual suspects disappeared into the wind, just when some fortunes appear to have changed. |

I believe he will spend the year with the Leafs, with his level of talent, he won't be a bench warmer or healthy scratch either. Putting Marner and Matthews on a line could be magic. Just mentioned this option, because Saul mentioned there were only two.
