Two ways to view this: He wants head coaching experience to make him more appealing as a NHL head coach candidate (although it seems like a backward step), or the Rangers were already prepared to move on from him and gave him the opportunity to find something else rather than firing him. Not sure if he was the sole coach responsible for the defensive nosedive, but he certainly couldn't be absolved of blame.

Look at it only one way, he wants to be a head coach in the NHL and this is a good approach to getting there. AHL coaches get promoted plenty these days.
