Hey Enzo! My son is moving into Uptown tomorrow -- I'll tell him to be on the lookout for a guy carrying a "Q Must Go!" sign ....

There's this thing called the salary cap...

Thanks for the info JJ. Ship is an interesting player. AA a possible candidate? He played well - hopefully he will stick around. Also considering that the cap will remain the same or marginally increase definitely raises some feelings for the Blackhawks. Vesey will probably want to get paid, so coming to Chicago limits his financial aspirations. However, playing on a cup contender should also be just as convincing. Also, learning from Toews, Hossa, Seabrook, Kane and possibly occupying the 1LW/2LW role should definitely be appeasing.
- 93Joe

Vesey would be on a 3-year ELC regardless of who he signs with. Shipachyov, however, is old enough (29) that he would not be bound by an ELC. He would be an unrestricted FA, free to sign for however much a team is willing to pay him.

Indeed - love catching bands on the way up and nostalgia tours of bands on the way down. Still hoping for some more Logan Square-ish type development to go in around there.

His tastes run much more towards the Aragon Ballroom! I took some out-of-town cousins to the Green Mill in the fall -- hadn't been there in about 15 years or so ....

Vesey would be on an ELC so that'll be the same whereever he signs.

If you're talking about his 2nd contract, being on a team that hasn't been able to pay big money on your next contract has not really precluded said player from getting big money on their 2nd contract, it just might not be in Chicago (see Brandon Saad). But on paper, playing in Chicago could definitely help Vesey with exposure and playing with quality players.

I still think it's a longshot, but here's hoping.

- Hawksfan37

Thanks HF37, et al. I forgot that it would be an ELC and was thinking UFA/RFA status. My mistake and thanks for the clarification gentlemen.

You would think the league office finance staff would be able to come up with better projections than these clowns:

Wasn't it only a couple of weeks ago that Bettman was talking about a 5% increase?

This tells me the escalator negotiations are not going well.

I agree with your $1.5MM.

First issue is why not change fiscal year to end on Dec 31?

That way by the time the trade deadline happens or certainly before the playoffs begin everyone will know where they stand.

Good times. That Hayes thing was probably one the most discussed board for quite sometime. I'm sure the Predator fan is discussing the Vesey thing amongst himself.

Don't they have to "true up" the preceding season - which can only happen after the play-offs end - before settling on a new cap?

Hence, rebuilding the Toronto Maple Leafs quickly into a contender is a top priority. They drive ratings across Canada, followed by the Habs. Nobody has been watching the last 2 seasons.

Having good teams in Buffalo, Nashville, Columbus and Arizona is a sexy idea but ultimately nobody among the big spending sponsors really cares. The teams that drive the NHL financial bus are the Hawks, Rangers, Leafs, Canadiens, Bruins, Flyers and Penguins. Those teams need to be playing late in the year.

- RickJ

For the NHL to say the 2017 cap will be relatively flat tells me if it goes up it will be less than $1.5 mill.....

A lot of teams in deep water.
...

- Al

The problem appears to be that the majority of the teams that are/will be in deep water are a lot of the same teams that the NHL needs playing late in the year from a revenue perspective. Good teams get punished by the cap + the teams that benefit from the cap aren't bringing in enough revenue to offset those losses from the big market teams not having deep runs = terrible cycle that's not getting fixed until the next lockout

when does the current CBA expire? 2022?

Thank you for the Kruger love, John. The man does what it takes to win and rarely makes mistakes, some bad penalties time-to-time, but he always competes. He reminds me so much of Samuel Pahlsson.

My dog is named Q after "the Stache". Up until this season, the only issue I had with Q was his usage of Leddy. But uptown is a nice area and I'm less than 1 mile from the Lake Shore Drive bike path and Lincoln Park. I'm serious about the North Ave roller rink though....I'd love to play some drop-in roller this summer in the city.

Don't be so excited about a new CBA: this league and its PA have a terrible record in negotiations.

But if the owners wanted some kind of cap relief this summer, I would guess the PA would be open to negotiating it.

It's really up to the owners of teams up against it - which would be the big market teams - to start demanding some help.

Rocky / McD - you're up.

While everyone comments on teams "up against the cap", is there a small handful of teams that is trying to get to the salary floor? I thought the Panthers were a few years ago and then they did the bad Boland deal, etc.

Warts and all, I'll take the three Cups while Q's been here with the core vs the Pens two appearances and one Cup with their Core in the same time period.

Granted, I get your'e not a huge Q fan, which is fine and this is Sullivan's first year with the Pens. He's done a great job.

Point is, for me anyway, is if you'd have told me that 19, 88 and crew would go on to win three Cups since 2009 and that Sid and Geno would still be stuck on one I'd have called you crazy.

- HawkintheD

You're right, I am not a Q guy. Never have been and that's since the 90's. But I agree with you about the cups.

As with many things now there appears to be an over adjustment and you are correct...When they slanted things against the big market teams the consequences were seemingly not realized.

As to the PA being open to negotiation - you could NOT be more wrong. The P.A. has given in the last three work stoppages - there will not be a fourth.

Spot on Al. I played two summers of Roller Hockey with the local Rec League before hitting the ice as a 7 year old that 2nd fall in house league. A great way to expand the racial profiles of hockey players is to put up outdoor roller rinks throughout the city of Chicago. There are several in the Southwest suburbs where I grew up and they are full all summer with pick up roller hockey games. I know that Rocky and the Hawks have made a push for getting the inner city youth involved/interested in hockey, but they can still do A LOT more, IMO.

I live in Uptown now and I just signed a petition to bring back the North Ave Beach Roller Rink. I do not know why they ever took it down, but it would be another great way to get more exposure for the sport, and for me to dangle some ankle benders on the beach

- EnzoD

I loved playing at the North Ave rink, got a little slick with the humidity from the Lake though. Saw the most gruesome hockey incident, ice or roller, while playing there. Guy fired the ball on goal and the goalie made a stick save and deflected a very hard shot right into my teammate's eye. His eye swelled to the size of a tennis ball and blood was gushing out. They had to remove his eye ball due the swelling, never forget it

I think that every year they've invoked the escalator, there were negotiations with the PA, and something went back in their direction.

If the league wants something, the PA is going to neither give in nor reject out of hand.

Don Fehr is still pissing himself laughing about that steep hill Bill Daly, Bettman and the owners were willing to die on over getting the length of new contracts changed to not exceed 5 years.

The NHLPA always gains a tidbit or 2 as a tradeoff when the owners press for something they want changed or done.
