True. But besides Barker you guys have drafted some stellar defence in the later rounds, and that my friend has made all the difference.
- Wildschwein

so toews is better then hall because of later round picks? can u name this stellar defence in the later rounds? cause as far as i know seabrooke was a 1st rounder and keith a 2nd rounder... not exactly late round picks. so to sum it up u mean hjalmarsson?

Wisniewski, Hjalmarsson, and Byfuglien come to mind. Regardless, no one's arguing Hall is better or on par with Toews. All they're arguing is that, while Toews and Kane signaled the transition into success for the Hawks, they did so at the same time that Keith, Seabrook, and Campbell came in to patrol the defense. The Hawks made smarter and more calculated moves and happened to bottom out at a good time. The Oilers did the opposite.

If we replaced Hall with Toews on the Oilers, the difference would be negligible because the defense still isn't fixed.

MaxBone summed it up nicely. Do you think Toews and the Hawks win 3 cups without Wisniewski, Hjalmarsson, Byfuglien, and especially Keith? I don't.
And yes I include Keith since he is arguably the best defenseman in the NHL and went 54th overall. Had anyone known what he was going to become he probably would have went in the top 3 if not 1rst overall that year.

Being in a market that was able to sign an elite Campbell to shelter a young Keith and seabrook was huge for them going forward. Then to take the next step hossa and kopecky ...

We did not have these luxuries.
Remember hossa turned edm down for less money elsewhere at one point ?

And as u stated, they had some pieces just coming up when toews and Kane were drafted. Not the case with hall at all. Completely empty cupboards when he was drafted .

People think these things just happen in a vacuum. "The Blackhawks are good cause toews is a winner"
"The oilers are struggling cause hall is bad"

It's so silly and shortsighted

Neither he nor Pahlsson (the person he was traded for) was there for the Cup win. I was just making the point that they've drafted a good number of Dmen quite late.

Just gave my notice at work. Stoked.

Heading back to Vancouver start of August to drink and jerk off for a month. Then back to the safety of university in September.

I guess he did help them to the conference finals the year prior and that might've helped their confidence going into 2010.

Sounds like a hell of a time I'm actually moving to Burnaby for university in the fall. Gonna have to figure out the night life and whatnot. Any favourite pubs or bars I ought to hit up?

Goin to sfu are ya?
Or bcit?

might actually go to sfu after my degree as they have a good masters program in land use management/environmental planning. Anything to prolong facing reality I say!!

Yeah there's lots.

Granville strip has a bunch but it's always chachi Surrey guys looking to fight post bar. Douchebags.

Guilt and co and port side in gastown are cool. But abit hipster and expensive.
The Cambie is great fun. cheap recycled beer I think. But after a few pitchers- It just don't matter..

And the black frog is a pub dedicated to the oilers. Nothing special about it other than being an oasis in the middle of a Canuck desert on game nights

Youll figure it out quickly. After livin in Toronto you realize how small of a city Vancouver really is

i agree that bringing in a player like campbell help them, i think sekera is the oilers mentor on the back end ....... correct me if i'm wrong but it is the seabrook and keith that the oilers are missing not the 3-7 roster spots. chicago's development direction was what attracted free agents in campbell and hossa..... if PC can prove he is moving in the right direction the free agents will come.
And i'm not of the mindset that hall is bad because the oilers are struggling.... i agree you can;t put it all on hall.... but u can;t just give him a pass and put it on management.

I'm going to BCIT. I'll likely give em all a try except maybe the Granville area. Then again I have a talent for avoiding douchey scumbags so maybe it won't be that bad of an idea. Thanks!

It's not a full pass for Hall, but he's far from the problem. I think the Oilers have a Seabrook-level guy in Klefbom and possibly Nurse. What they're lacking is a high-end top end guy right now to help usher in the new young group. Stralman would've been just that a couple years back, but management wasn't even close.
