What I don't understand:

I see a problem with trading for his rights at all, no matter the pick. If you know he is going to sign, you would just wait. However, you can't know that otherwise is tampering. Therefore, are we in the situation where we can trade a 1st or 2nd round pick for a guy who could wait a couple months and then sign somewhere else? Only way you do a 1st is if you know 100% he is going to sign, and therefore you can just wait til August 15th anyways. What am I missing?

- RhinoFan

The 2nd or 1st would be conditional on him signing - a 3rd is the offer just for his rights.

hossa signed a 12 year deal with hawks, paying him til he is 42

kovy bolted after signing what a 17 year deal?

Any team that has playoff aspirations and has a legit chance at them and knows that draft pick isn't going to be in the top half of the draft.

Throw in the old Islanders wordage and make it a conditional 1st if he signs or a lottery protected pick.

The point is if you want Steven Stamkos and the price is there you need to decide if its worth it. I think it is. The 22nd pick in the 2017 draft for a 26 year old future hall of famer...

I guess I'm greedy I just don't like giving up a first that's just a little too steep for me you can do so many things with that pick but like you said it's for Stamkos

I posted this a few months ago and maybe 89 can back this up - But my friend talked directly to a Sabres player this off season in a private setting and he said Stamkos has been here while he was injured and loves the city and training staff.

But that it's 50/50 on Murray's part because he's skeptical of contract demands. (The last part isn't from the player but a different source)

simple folks..
If Tampa can not sign SS, they will trade him for picks to a team prior to draft.
That is the best chance for Sabres in my opinion.
If SS get to free agency, its anyone's game.

I understand, the conditional stuff makes sense. Gotcha, okay, back to lurking.

I'm pretty sure they would give him whatever he wants which I'm fine with
They could give him a huge signing bonus and Murray has nothing to do with it
It's all Tp money

The exceptions not the rule though.

There's always exceptions. But I would take the sure thing.

- Stripes77

While I understand both sides to the draft crapshoot argument. Comments always lack context.

Fo example, 2015 was loaded. Trading the 21st pick in that draft is like trading the 10th or 12th pick in the 2014 draft.

Also, if you have a scouting staff/GM with a good track record, that pick or picks like it should be considered valuable

Not necessarily. If Murray is concerned the money wouldn't be analytically spent well on a player with blood clot history or his age/production etc. Maybe he doesn't pull the move because he looks at big picture of franchise.

Anything like this would HAVE to be tampering, wouldn't it??

No because he probably was just visiting and possibly knows friends in the organization who introduced him to training staff and maybe gave him some pointers. Or he knows of the training staff. I'm not sure.

I don't think Murray would have any say if Terry wants him IMO

Starting at 2010 and going backwards, to allow for players who have had time in the NHL, these are forwards drafted in the 2nd half of the 1st round who score at a 2/3 ppg rate:

Tarasenko
Kuznetsov
Eberle
Ennis (close - 223 in 368 games)
Pacioretty
Giroux
Oshie
Parise
Getzlaf
Perry
Mike Richards (close - 487 in 749 games)
Steen (close - 481 in 746 games)
Frolov
Justin Williams (close - 634 in 1000 games)

So...would you not take Stamkos - who had 64 points in 77 games - a DOWN year, over that possibility (0.83 points per game)?

Also note that more of these picks were pre-2008 (only 4 of these players drafted that recently, showing more finds like this are more rare in recent years)
