Schenn wasn't a top-4 defenceman in Los Angeles this year or in Philadelphia last year, so that wouldn't help the Canucks round out their top-2 defence pairings.
The comparisons that some people are coming up with for Gudbranson are pretty questionable, especially given the surprisingly optimistic views of McCann.

Gudbranson was overmatched in a top-4 role.
It's a fair comparison.
I do think Gudbranson has the edge, but I'd much prefer a UFA and to have kept those assets and drafted a D with the 2nd.
And whether McCann reaches his potential or not has no bearing on his current value, which is a recent 1st round pick who's developed well in the two years since his draft.
The value of the trade was bad for the Canucks.
