Even if traded to Leafs, Stamkos will be limited to only a 7 year contract under CBA rules.
Edit: Ok others have corrected MA - Leafsandbolts
Is there a clause that they have to have played the season prior or something?
Because I thought as long as it was your own player, you could sign for 8 years.
So if they traded for him at the draft, they get his current contract, he becomes a Leaf under the current deal (for 1 more week after the draft) and during that time, they can extend him for 8.
I always thought it worked like that.
Huh, learn something new every day |

Are sign and trades allowed under CBA? Can Toronto agree to a contract with Stamkos and then trade something to Tampa to sign him for that contract amount.
So hypothetically Leafs and Stamkos agree to 8 yr 72 million dollar contract. Toronto gets Tampa to sign Stamkos to that deal and then trades him immediately to Toronto for a player or picks. That way at least Tampa gets something out of it.
I know it happens all the time in the NBA. - Matthews_Auston
Does not make any sense logically. The eighth year of a contract is almost always in the favor of the player not the team. Logically speaking the player will not be at his peak at the end of his contract. It would be hard to imagine Stamkos producing more at 34-35 years old than at 26-27 years old. So why on earth would a team pay compensation for a negative?

Fair points, and a 7 year deal would put him right at expiry just after we have to re-sign Rielly, and probably one of our forward prospects will be up for a pay day by then.
He could always be moved at that time if need be. |

It essentially never happens in the nhl.
I’m usually the first to dismiss them.
This might actually be the one time it makes some sense…

fair points.
Stamkos would really have to push for it … otherwise it’s dead in the water.
I don’t think the compensation to TB would be a lot. A package of spare parts consisting of some of bozak/Holland/leivo/percy/s.carrick is all I’d see going back.

What Stamkos brings to the table in terms of work ethic, leadership, and media shelter for the kids is worth the money.
The leafs aren't a #1 center away from a cup. But who are the Matthews, Marner, Nylanders looking up to as veterans? Laich, Michalek, Lupul, JVR? They need someone who makes them think 'if Datsyuk is hitting the gym this hard I should be too' - Schennski
Look at Jagr in FLA. He's showing the kids what it take to be a pro in the big league. |

Stamkos could be our O'Reilly. Young enough to be in the long term plans but still old enough that Matthews would be influenced by him.
I'm sure Michalek, Laich and Lupul would be good insulators, but no way Nylander is looking at Laich and thinking 'I want to be him in 8 years' - Schennski
I don't know your roster, so like I said I wasn't trying to downplay who you have there. Just pointing out the Sabres have former captain of a couple teams plus Stanley Cup winner in Gionta, a respected hard working O'Reilly, and a respected veteran in Gorges. Not saying Gionta and Gorges are much good anymore, but it's also not their stat sheet that is helping the younger guys.
Obviously Stamkos helps a bunch, and JVR, but do you guys have any former cup winners/10+ year NHL vets? Again, truly asking because I don't know your roster.
As many Sabres fans have said in our threads, we're excited for both teams to be good again in the next couple years and play some meaningful games against each other. |

If so, my stance is softened somewhat. I still get a feeling the Leafs might not even table him an offer though. Just going by what Babcock was saying in interviews during the world cup. Nothing definitive, but some of his comments made me think they view this the same why I do... great player, a year too early.
I'll see if I can dig up the interview in question and post a link...

Yes, and he doesn't have a 10 million for 7 years contract.
There is leadership we can obtain if that is whats needed without spending that loot and term on one player. Who's health is a big question mark which most people are not talking about or dodging the issue.

You are correct, but using him as a reference point on this blog is not optimal. I have read very little in the way of positives about him. He is perhaps the most hated guy by both players, broadcasters and fans there is in media. Check out this site, it's quite funny.
