Why so personal? Hug for you Codes1087. It's a bad trade, and the list of other bad trades by Benning just posted really underscores it. I was there many times in the last decade or so...rationalizing bad decisions because I wanted to believe in my team. Once your favourite org turns the corner and installs a competent front office - like (gasp) the Leafs finally did - you'll be way less grouchy. And that statement passes both the eye and analytics test.

Bad trades? How so?
I don't see any players gone starring anywhere on their own.

An AHLer & 2 draft picks hardly earth shattering.
After top 15 the draft is weak.
RHD don't get moved very often.

We could have paid our first rounder and 33 OA for Griffin Reinhart.....

Couldn't we just get draft picks from you?

No need for you to worry...you'll have another 50 years to acquire picks.

You seem to know a lot about me, yet this is one of the first times I have seen you poking your head and adding your 2 cents in our blogs
If I hand write a letter to Benning with suggestions on being a GOOD GM, do you think you could sign and mail it for me?

- Codes1087

"Our" blogs.
Absolutely - I'll even sign a letter to get you out of your last period class tomorrow if that will help too.

Great blog, Carol! Been following for a while but I finally just got around to signing up for Hockeybuzz. Figured now would be as good a time as any to offer my idle thoughts.

After the initial shock wore off, I think this deal makes sense. We badly needed someone new on the blue line right away, and this removes the pressure to use the 5th overall pick to draft a defenceman who won't help us for 2 or 3 years anyway. I was also getting a little worried that we were accumulating too many young skilled forwards (just look at the Oilers), and Benning knew this. And with McCann gone, this will let guys like Vey and Granlund play their natural position more. I agree though that the price was steep. If this were a straight-up player-for-player trade I'd be happy, but those picks hurt.

But that's just the humble opinion of a newbie. Feel free to rip on me.

Looking forward to being part of the Hockeybuzz community!

Even if you just compare asset management in terms of draft picks in, draft picks out Benning loses.

Obviously my post is ignoring his future potential but we are certainly a better team next year. McCann just wasn't ready

I love this argument. There is no recognition at all to the fact that Benning acquired a stale roster that pretty much the entire fan base wanted overhauled and that there was a major age gap between the prospects and vets and he needed to bridge that gap by getting some players in thier early to mid 20's.

Wow, you were onboard with the plan 24 hours ago and are now having a meltdown
- CanuckDon

I'm onboard with drafting and developing, I'm not onboard with spending assets to improve your team in one area and making it worse in another.

My vision for this team is three four five years down the road, that's the way I see things….not in the immediate like you're saying.

Haha - I cut and pasted. They are all quick to point out the guys the Canucks traded flaws, but seem to forget about who they got back.

For the record -I'd be very happy to have a guy like Gudbranson on the Leafs 3rd pairing, but not at the price that was paid.

The picks are high ones. But you have to think that 2nd was going to be a d-man, so the 4th is the real loss, and we got a mid 5th rounder back for that. You're right it hurts, but he's 24 which makes us have a pretty young d-corps of tanev, tree, Hutton and EG going forward. EG has lots to learn but hammer will still likely be back and elder will continue to help these young guys grow. The 24-28 age gap is big on this team, we just filled it a little. I expect JB to get a couple wingers in that age range. Love it!

Anf yet all the JB critics think any deal traded future HOFers or top 6 players.
Overreaction about nothing much.
