I posted this exact same thing a couple of weeks ago...Marchand grew on me watching the IIHL tournament.

I can feel a connection bloated

An interesting take. Just goes to show how stats can be skewed to fit the claim. Yost took one set of numbers and identified EG as awful, while this piece tweaks a few things and says that hes actually solid and helps his teammates play better

I wouldn't rate analytics any more than 40-50% when assessing a player. Anyone who has played hockey at any competitive level knows there is a lot going on that can't be measured.

Don't let egg heads, on their computer, who can't skate be the deciding factor on a players impact.

I abandoned HockeyBuzz yesterday purely for self-preservation reasons. Safe bet that whenever the Canucks do anything this place will be a horrendous poo-fest. I was looking forward to the draft but am changing my mind and will definitely avoid HockeyBuzz for a few days after the draft.
- Marwood

Why avoid it? Canucks cant miss at #5 with Dubois/Tkachuk and we just traded the rest of our meaningful picks away, what could Canuck fans possibly female dog about for the few days after the draft?!

Everyone is stressing about Yost's advanced stat's article. Who's opinion would you trust on EG, his or JB's? Forget the 2nd we traded.
- VanHockeyGuy

I don't trust anything Yost says never have never will

I just listened to Noodles & Ferraro talk about Gubranson and they compared him to a guy like Robyn Regehr; RR had less than stellar possession numbers, they said, but he did things analytics can't or don't measure.

His compete level was extremely high, his 50/50 "one on one" puck battles to retrieve the puck were a majority win for him, he was a playoff warrior who was extremely hard to play against, these things are immeasurable by analytics.

Retrieve the puck, get it to Doughty and job done, you're on your breakout...they liked the addition.

However, they didn't like where the Canucks are and the fact Bennng has a third last place team and he's pissing away draft picks when they should be rebuilding. Because in their opinion, the Canucks don't have anyone to score goals (yet) and they're STILL gonna have a very difficult time making the playoffs in the West.

Disclaimer....don't piss on the messenger!!!!!

- LeftCoaster

That's probably the most fair assessment I've heard so far.. That's why I've always liked Ferraro.. No bs, straight shooter no matter what team it is

Funny story from Memorial Cup practices at my Arena here in Red Deer...

I had coffee with one of the scouts from London Knights yesterday and he said that EDM is looking HARD at Juolevi for 4th overall. I guess his teammates have been giving him a hard time about being potentially picked by the Oil as even the Oilers are a bit of a running joke amongst the junior players. He's not happy about it apparently.

And since the Leafs have been the laughing stock of the league for the better part of 50 years one has to wonder what Marner and Matthews are thinking...

- LordHumungous

Well if that does happen it's a dream come true for management

For some reason I find this sentence funny, like youve conducted an analysis to determine how much value you put on analytics

And I dont use it to evaluate either, I like to look into things when I see a player is performing well and use the numbers to see what might be bringing them success (ie high shooting percentage, zone opportunities, etc), but I dont lean on it to predict future success as variables change things far too often that throw the accuracy off. Most of these stats are interesting but the results can be very broad

I remember Regher from Calgary's 2004 cup run and he was an absolute beast. If we can get anything close to that from Gudbrandson I will be happy.

I should have phrased that better. I'm not a fan of these advanced stats so I basically I wouldn't use them as my primary way of looking at a players value.

I get that, it upsets everyone. Treliving did the same with Hamilton. That said CAL & VAN have very astute GM's with regards to talent evaluation. Like I said before, who's Yost to judge?

Definitely not the primary way, but I also wouldnt call shooting percentage or zone starts as advanced stats either. That kind of information is just fact, like face off percentage or hits, and doesnt imply that a player is good or not but shows what they have done

I like Dubois but I have had a chance to watch Tkachuk here all week at Memorial Cup and I think Tkachuk needs to be our pick if available. Hunter feels he's gonna be a bonafide 40 goal guy in the NHL.

Yeah I know, I'm just saying I put more value in those stats but dont consider them "advanced"

I'm comfortable with either. I think both have the ability or be impact players. I don't think we will get a choice. I think we get who ever is left over.

I have a feeling Edmonton takes Tkachuck as they are pretty set down the middle. If the pick get traded I would lean toward Dubois going 4th based on the fact he can play center.

I think Tkachuk will be the first forward after the big 3 gone. Vancouver is in the spot though where they dont get a say. If Edmonton doesnt take a D, then the Canucks get Tkachuk. If he's taken, then Canucks get Dubois, should be very little debate

I think Benning is eyeing up Dubios just based on the McCann trade which is fine. The thought of Boeser and Tkchuck though

I want Tkachuk but after the trade I think it is obvious Bennings direction

I have to be honest.

For the longest time I didn't realize Micah was different from Makita. Didn't pay attention to the different spelling. I always thought it strange that Makita changed his avatar so regularly.

Sorry Micah.

I got to lay off the wacky tobaccy.

Jeez, you didn't notice the difference in wit and insight between his posts and mine? For shame.

I got to admit sometimes I wonder why I agreed to take on this gig (like today), I remember the reason and it was sensnucksnocups having free reign here because Micah555 took on a new job or something and wasn't around as much as was needed at the time. But sometimes I just want to go back to calling out asinine posters instead of being the responsible one...

Yeah, it's pretty thankless. But the power trip is totally worth it.
