He hasn't won a trade yet! And you know damn well he's gonna overpay Gudbranson when the time comes, it's his MO, he's an idiot.

His one saving grace is he can evaluate prospects and draft well….unfortunately they only have two picks in the top four rounds now.

(frank) me

The way I see it is he will probably spend about 5 mil on Gudbrandson and draft a top 6 player like Tkachuk or Dubois and spend 1 mil for the next three years .

So 6 mil for a top 4 young Dman and a top 6 forward for the next couple of years. Boy that Benning is a dumbass.

Does anyone know what Eberles salary is?

I'd just like to point out that trading our second round picks goes way back. since 1999 the Canucks have had 8 second round picks, and when we didn't trade those picks away, more often than not, they ended up being busts.

2002- Kiril Koltsov, Defence
2003- Marc-Andre Bernier, Right Wing
2005- Mason Raymond, Left Wing
2007- Taylor Ellington, Defence
2008- Yann Sauve, Defence
2009- Anton Rodin, Right Wing
2012- Alexandre Mallet, Left Wing
2014- Thatcher Demko, Goaltender

1 NHLer, 1 blue chip prospect, 1 possible prospect. It seems when we have chosen Defence in the second round it hasnt really worked out well for us
so maybe stop thinking that 33OA was gonna be a surefire future top 4 Defenceman

- GloveHandStrong

yes but let's be honest and say looking at the canucks draft history, few teams picked as poorly as they have.

To be fair, only 4 of those guys were drafted in the 2nd round.

You know how many guys playing top two I can name who weren't "rated" as top two guys? Jesus man look around the league. Here's 12 of the top 15 point producers last year on defence.

Burns drafted 20th overall not projected to be top pairing guy.
Shea Weber, second round.
Duncan Keith, second round.
Subban, second round.
Erik Karlsson, 15th overall not projected to be top paring guy.
Kris Letang, third round.
Roman Josi, second round.
Dustin Byfuglien, seventh round.
Tyson Barrie, third round.
Mark Giordano, not even drafted.

Brent Seabrook, late first round 23rd.
John Klingberg, fifth round.

Perfect, the 3rd, 5th, 6th and two 7th rounders can get us those guys

Juoelivi is considered surefire top 4, so are chychrun and sergachev.

Of course or a draft without any top 4 D would be epic.

We got an extra 5th rounder so we have a great chance at Klingberg
- golfingsince

Then trade him away within two years for someone drafted in 2011.

For sure & i agree. I merely state i don't see any D highly.
Plenty of top 4 & no clue what gem may surprise & be a sleeper if any.

- Nighthawk

But that's the problem: drafting is at best an educated guess... you don't know exactly what a player is going to become until you surround them with an NHL team and facility and let them develop into the best that they can be.

And the way to do that is to draft as many people as you can. You want to win the lottery, you probably need to buy more than one ticket...

Not an extra, ours went to Montreal in the Prust deal...

But that's considered their floor....

We'll be lucky if Gudbranson ever hits top pairing.

The problem is that Gudbranson may or may not actually be a top 4 level D-man... not on a good team anyway.

The fact that none of them could contribute says more…it says your system lacks depth, your talent level needs to improve, it also says your team isn't in a position to compete so don't trade away your picks and prospects.

Every team has injuries.

Five million on Gudbranson is worse than the Sbisa contract for what he provides. He's not even close to the dman Edler is and you want to get rid of him because he's not tough.

You don't know if Tkachuk or Dubois will be top six players and if they do they'll need three years to get there, or more.

In all honesty, and you don't wanna hear this, but Benning reminds me so much if a typical Leafs GM in the early 2000s.

The odd good drafting like Rask, Steen, Stralman but just wouldn't let them develop. Trading for older players (than those drafting away) and treating draft picks like they mean nothing

Eberle's salary in a little more than Sutter's. His career low in points is better than Sutter's career high.

EG is not getting 5m per unless he shows he has taken that next step.
Too early to predict how it plays out. Besides we have cap space & it will get spent eventually if not this year then in the next 1-2yrs.

Cup rings are Cup rings man; a guy who gets laid once when he's 18 but never again isn't a virgin, but a 40 year old who's never been laid is. Care to share your franchise success?
- Deeps27

Your team has never been out of the 3rd round in a century long history. Congrats on your cups 50 years ago and beyond when there were only 4 teams out of 6 in the playoffs playing 5 game rounds. Since then you have been the worse franchise in NHL history.

If the Canucks have been bad with their three Stanley Cup finals in the modern NHL,,,, you should have been relegated to high school floor hockey.

Meh…I think Benning is a good drafter, in two years he's produced some good young players, more than Nonis or Gillis ever did during their time here.

Tkachuk and Dubois both have been regarded with higher potential than McCann, so there might be doubts if they make top 6, but no moreso than JM who remains a question mark even with 69 NHL games.

Also McCann was supposed to take longer than he did to even make his debut, let alone rookie season. And before you say it, yes a poor lineup aided him making the team, but as we have discussed today the NHL forward group isnt any better so odds are either one will make an early debut as well

If he can be put in an offensive role and produce 25 to 35 points….I'll say I was wrong and love this deal. If not, it wasn't worth it IMO.

I think everyone here can agree that EG not being able to sign an extension until Jan 1, 2017 is a really really good thing...
