For me personally, it came down to trading the 4th rounder down to a 5th rounder. The timing of the trade. If it was at the trade deadline and a need for van at that time or next season when van really knows what they have for rookies and whether the guys they tried so hard to develop in the nhl this season haven't panned out. I am also the type of person to look at long term gain over short term satisfaction.

Personally i like the timing of the trade with free agency & the draft coming fast.

2 picks in a week draft mean nada unless unearth a hidden gem that has yet to happen.
- Nighthawk

This is not a weak draft! People need to stop saying that because they want it to be so because their GM keeps trading away their draft picks!

"At first glance the strength of the 2016 draft class may be the overall depth and blend of prospects available," said Dan Marr, NHL director of Central Scouting. "The top five will sort themselves out as being the cream of the crop, but similar to the 2015 draft there will be a solid nucleus of players with NHL potential through the top three rounds and at every position."

I love that we can expect you and your negativity, only after Canucks have made a trade OR have signed a player.

Its almost as though people think this is the trade deadline or something. This is just the beginning. I want to assume that Biega or Pedan get traded. Bae and Etem need to be signed. Hansen COULD get traded. Higgins or Burrows COULD get bought out. Miller COULD get traded (for a bag of pucks one could hope). Lots of stuff can still happen between now and the draft.

lol everybody is going to have a different opinion. I have faith in the idea that JB has a plan and is moving the plan along but at times, I'm left a little confused by the path

After the top 12-15 there is very lil RHD to pick.
No impact C's or snipers. I don't see anything to be had that helps us.
JB has enough chances on the go as is & has a draft plan.
I'll wait to see what next years roster looks like when the dust settles.

I really hate that people label drafts "weak" if there is no standout generational talent in the top 2 spots. The whole draft class is considered weak because of it? Don't sell off draft picks and don't write off a draft class because of what people are saying about the top 30 players. These are kids developing, there is always value in draft picks...

I think Pedan is highly likely to be moved. Can not be sent to Utica without clearing waivers & with likely chance if the expansion draft next year i expect him gone.

They count. Everything counts. They aren't going to be winning anything this year, so why not keep your assets and build for two or three years down the road?
- BINGO!

Do they count though? However unlikely it is, what if McCann never makes it out of the AHL? What if all the players drafted never make it, like happened to every pick the Canucks made in the 2007 draft? Can't count chickens before they hatch

Haha - I cut and pasted. They are all quick to point out the guys the Canucks traded flaws, but seem to forget about who they got back.

For the record -I'd be very happy to have a guy like Gudbranson on the Leafs 3rd pairing, but not at the price that was paid.

- Deeps27

He would instantly become your 2nd best defenseman, considering how trash your current defense is.

Biega is signed to a 1 way contract, which is unfortunate because I don't see him seeing much ice. I think Benning will make many more moves, and will try and acquire some picks in the process. (I hope)

The 2015 draft was WEAK after Connor McDavid went off the board...

But you didn't give up a 32 year old defenseman to get a 24 year old defenseman. You gave up a 20 year old forward and 2 draft picks.

The only thing Van really have to trade is draft picks and players that they need. Makes no sense to fill holes if your going to trade away to create more holes.

because we are far enough past the 2015 draft to be able to label it 'weak' after 1 year?

He might be a top 4 in the AHL. MAYBE. But that's pushing it. How bad do you think he is? Would love to hear more. Feel like you have a lot of unbiased knowledge that is helpful.

It makes me so mad that I shlt myself actually. Come on man, no need to waste characters on the literal meaning. I 'dislike' when people write off these kids is all I am saying. It is always as though the top 30 kids get a look, and if there is no generational talent, or 3 kids who were once given exceptional status, the draft is considered "weak" which doesn't make sense to me. I never sell draft picks short, and don't think you should sell these kids short either.
