June 30th is the end. Season starts at preseason. Players with no contract cannot participate.

Personally I'd protect both McCabe and pysyk over girg and Larsson. Sabres might consider 8 skaters rather than 7/3

meh. either way you look at it, for us its that tier of pysyk, ennis, foligno, girgensons, larsson, ullmark...

all younger players with some value, none irreplaceable. it is nice that the league decided to not absolutely shaft expansion teams with either 38 year old grizzled vets, former prospects that didnt pop, or tweener ahl/nhl types. i wonder how that affects a players value, if you trade for a player that you know you arent going to protect, and you could lose him in the draft, are you willing to give up an asset that the other team would not have to expose (ie a younger prospect or draft pick)?

None of this matters because I can almost guarantee there will be at least two players not on the roster currently who will be exempt

1. sign a few guys like soupy on 1 year deals

2. make a few 2 or 3 for 1 trades to get impact players

It doesn't make sense to have players entering their third year in nhl be apart of the expansion because the NHL would never allow a team to take the 1st overall pick who would likely make the team his first year and be considered a "first year player" I fully believe they will settle on completed their first two years in the NHL and players who are drafted next year or just sign their ELC next off season won't count as they've never played professional hockey.
