The fact you called Volchenkov A-Train proves my point. He was way more noticeable out there with his hits and zillion blocked shots. Remember I said flashy, not better. Phillips did his job quietly and probably never really got the full accolades he deserved.

well to be honest ..... I didn't feel like typing out his name, so I used his nickname....

I'll concede that 'the big hits, or blocked shots' may have outshone The Big Rig's steady play ..... until the play=offs came.

With all do respect to Jared's mention of it in his article, personally I judged all other Senators by comparing them to Phillips. He didn't just step it up a notch in the play-offs - he was a beast! He always became an ornery guys to play against - sometimes down right nasty

If the rest of them would have stepped it up like he did, they may just have beaten NJ in '03, and went on to win The Cup

To me, it's money that can be used to get a decent 5/6 guy. A Boro/Wideman pair can't happen again unless they have improve their game immensely. I think Wideman can maybe pull out a respectable season, but to me an upgrade on Boro is needed. I love his effort and toughness, but he just doesn't seem to be consistent enough out there. Especially if you're going to put him on the penalty kill.
- Gord_Wilson_2.0
Boro should be the 7th man ,we do need a bit more experience to help out Wideman

i agree.... to play an entire career spanning nearly 1200 games with one team is a rare thing nowadays.

Absolutely...a couple of friends and I took to using the acronyms RSP and POP to describe him - Regular Season Phillips and PlayOff Phillips ....and at time so few players could claim that the playoff versions were better than the regular season versions.

Cheers to a great career.

Phillips was the ultimate team guy and great in the community. He gave it everything he had and it's really too bad that he had to go out this way.

One thing I completely disagree with is retiring his jersey. Ottawa, or any other team for that matter, should not be in the business of retiring jerseys of guys who aren't even close to hall of famers. It's makes the entire organization look ridiculous.

In my opinion, jersey retirements are for the best of the best. They are for guys who are hall of famers and have either taken home some personal hardware, or been a force in season(s) where the team has accomplished a lot. Phillips is neither. For the bulk of his career, Phillips wasn't even a top 2 Dman on this team.

I love the guy and I appreciate what he's done, but retiring his number would be pretty damn Mickey Mouse.

If established teams retired every Phillips type that ever wore their jersey, there'd be no numbers left to wear.

Thinking we can just make a wall of honor ,and place each of the better Sens players there. But yes retiring a number should be reserved for the best of the best

How many established teams have a guy play over 1000 games with one franchise nowadays? That's a pretty monumental feat. There are loads of other players who have had their jerseys retired who will never sniff the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is for great accomplishments to the game of hockey. Retiring jerseys is for great accomplishments in a single city. He showed great commitment to this city, that should be paid back. He will undoubtedly have his number retired.

not sure i would call it "mickey mouse" but i agree with you.

phillips was definitely a warrior for this team, but he was never what i'd consider a "great player". jersey retirements are for great players........hell, there are even a lot of great players who don't get their jersey retired.

i think there should be more to it than just "he played here a long time"...........maybe not the popular opinion, but hey.

all that being said....i agree that maybe you have a nice murale or something at the rink to commemorate him, and a nice "phillips' night...but not his jersey in the rafters.

like who?

i'm honestly asking.....i can't think of a single player (off the top of my head) who's jersey is hanging in the rafters somewhere who isn't already, or well on his way to being in the HOF.....or if not, would definitely have been considered.

Ken Danyeko (spelling) and Adam Foote leap to mind off the bat in recent years. Granted, they have rings, but the level of player were relatively similar. Loads may have been the wrong term, but there are players who don't fit the Hall of Fame bill who have had their jersey retired.

I don't even think a wall of fame or anything else is necessary. We are still a young franchise. Most of our best players either moved on early to mid career, (Hossa, Chara) or moved on due to their own greed and stupidity (Yashin, Heatley).

If we had a wall of fame, there'd be two guys on it.. Phillips and Alfie.

Phillips is going to get a great retirement ceremony and a massive standing ovation. There are tons of pictures of him included all over the building (and they will be moved when the new building is done). Chris Phillips' career will have a huge stamp on this franchise forever. Nothing more really needs to be done in my opinion.

Those two Jersey retirings are Mickey Mouse. I'm sorry, but that's brutal.

If those players played for any of the original 6 teams, or probably any of the other 6 teams in the first wave of expansion, there's no way they would have jerseys in the rafters.

I'm just saying.

Don't claim jersey retirements are only for the best of the best, when there is evidence to the contrary. Hall of Fame is for great accomplishments in hockey. Jersey retirements are for great accomplishments in a city.

This team has no history worth celebrating. I have no problem celebrating Phillips as a Sens journeyman.

Gord, they are clearly the exception, not the rule.

I don't want to make Phillips the exception.

Isnt your warning, by definition, trolling? Going on to another team's site and issuing threats should get one banned.

I see Phillips in a similar position to maybe Teppo Numminen.

Yeah, this sorta thing is the exception, rather than the rule. That's sorta the reason I think he should be added to the rafters. It's sort of exceptional these days to spend your entire career with one franchise when it lasts so many years. Not HoF, but his importance to the franchise as a whole merits it, in my opinion.

there is also a ton of HOF players, great great players, who don't have their jersey's retired. in fact, i'd argue there are far more examples of elite HOF palyers who don't have their jersey's retired then there are of "average" players who do.
