The Sens have Zibanejad, Turris, Pageau, Smith, and Lazar at center. Why would they want Eric Staal? There must be a trade in there somewhere. Dominoes...

because of all the centers you just names

So, why does Phaneuf come up in this thread?

It is really a subconscious auto response by some Leaf fans. Every time Phil Kessel has another great playoff game, Leaf faithful start chanting Phaneuf, Phaneuf, Phaneuf. Notice how seldom, if ever, they recognize Kessel's great play during this Stanley Cup playoff.

Ottawa management and fans are really happy with the Phaneuf trade. It had an immediate positive affect on the play of Cody Ceci. Phaneuf, playing #4 in Ottawa, paired with Ceci, looks very solid for next year.

Ottawa dumped a ton of salary on the Leafs ($10,443,000). Think about it. Instead of having Cowen, Greening, Lindberg and Michelak on the books they start next year having Phaneuf in a second pairing with a great young Dman in Ceci.

All the pressure is off Phaneuf. He gets to play behind the all world Karlsson and with a highly skilled young skater in Ceci. His play over the last part of the season for Ottawa was very good. Ceci looked outstanding when paired with Phaneuf. Phaneuf seemed to love the change and was grateful for a fresh start. I have no doubt we will revisit this theme many times over the next few years.

Can't wait to see the leagues worst team defensively expect Phaneuf to solve the problem. I remember when th Leafs tried the same thing. Worked out well for us as you can see.

But to answer your question two reasons why Phaneuf was brought up. He plays for the team that's being rumoured and the rumour involves a guy who hates and despises and doesn't respect Phaneuf.

But hey at least you got to feed us delusional optimism to mask concern over the reality of the situation.

I suppose but the problem is a team wide issue, not a missing piece. You're not the worst at something because of a single flaw in a single area.

I'm not going to lie. I was hoping the Leafs would have played Cowen. I wanted to see first hand just how bad he was.

They finished in a position to win the lottery.

Tell us, whoever us is, where the Sens finished in the standings? Also tell "us" which team was trying to win this year.

Or did you mean the goals against standings? If so the Leafs finished ahead of the Sens. So did every other team.

He was terrible ,both him and Cowen were outplayed by Boro bad .Again Pheaneuf isnt he only reason we have some hope ,Having Turris and Macarther, both of whom are reliable two way forwards back playing .Should also help us not have to play inexperienced or just not ready players in their stead

Every team has injuries so you can't assume they'll be healtho and nobody else gets hurt. Reality doesn't often work out that way. For the Sens sake they'll need to avoid injuries to key players. They don't have the depth to overcome them. They're already on thin ice as it is.

They have the depth ,but losing two top 6 guys like that would hurt any team ,the kids we have coming behind as potential replacements ,just were rushed into a position they were not ready for .People forget just how young Ottawa still is up front and on the defense

Good teams overcome injuries and Turris and Mac aren't exactly game changing franchise players that should cripple a team without them. Lots of young teams in the league these. Average player age has gone down significantly across the league. Like they have the past few years they'll struggle to make the playoffs.

They are when you have Zibby,JGP and Lazar as your next three centers all of whom were 22 years old or younger, and havent established themselves yet .And your most experienced top LW is a second year player

With all due respect that isn't anywhere near impressive. Those 3 names don't exactly scream a bright future imo.

Meh ,Thats the funny thing about the future it unpredictable .Zibby scored 51 points as a 22 year old center ,JGP has shown he should be one of the better defensive number 3 men in the league. And Lazar is a work in progress.

We arent perfect ,and could use a impact center. In the top 6 .But we really arent that bad a team ,just a little inexperienced

sounds like the makings of an 85-90 point team.

9th place finishes are the bestest.

sure.

if your backup goalie goes on another once in a lifetime heater, 99 points seems completely achievable.
