This situation just has Scott Gomez written all over it.
- DeflatedPucks

agreed...except he is UFA and signed to a retarded deal but someone will give him a long term deal and regret it come September

I can't wait.

Feel bad for the guy because he doesn't want it to be over yet, but it's getting there.

I find it funny how people were going on about Skinner being toast when it was Eric Staal that was damaged beyond all recognition this whole time.

Has Cam Ward been damaged since 2006?

Epic

On Eric Staal...

So I have been hearing for about two weeks now from an outstanding source familiar with the situation that the Ottawa Senators are very serious in making a pitch for Eric Staal. It truly sounds like Carolina is wanting to move on from a return...NJ is also interested at this point..."

I don't think Staal's contract is terrible. A legit 2C for $6M isnt all that bad. I get the term is long but a shut down center with offensive upside will still be a tradeable commodity in 4-5 years.

Hell, even if the Pens season end in a cup win, I would still try to trade Malkin for Staal + if they want to move on from him. Crosby-Staal-Bonino is still the best center group in the league.

Eric Staal in Ottawa makes sense for a number of reasons.

I think Stamkos, Matthews, Kadri can be just as good.

Well, yeah... Francis will only take him back at WAY below market value.

.. actually, at this point I am not sure what his market value should be.

He was on what, a 40 point pace, production in steady decline, 31 years old.

Tyler Bozak scored at a higher rate last year at 30 years old.

Staal can't be worth more than 4 at this point.

Gally is Gallagher, Chucky is Galchenyuk, dumb nicknames the players gave them
- Symba007

For me it's easier to type and i don't no i just thought he might be a decent option depending on the price. They need a top 6 center unless you want to see Pleks in the top 6 again next year.

Eric Staal is over way over the hill. Spending big money on that stiff will handcuff you for the term of his contract But some idiot GM will see glory days of the past but his glory days and like yesterday's news. Go with youth not geezers who cannot play anymore. Too many fat wallets and no return on your investment
- holeinone

this reminds me of when the Lightning bought out Lecavalier and Philly signed him to that deal 5 yrs @ 4.5 cap hit or something like that.

Sadly...Plek is more productive than Staal at this point, I know it sucks but it's the reality.

Exactly.

And I don't think the Canes would take him back for more than $3 mill. per

I would have traded them straight up last year and been all kinds of happy about it.

I don't think so they would lose 0 assets, I really think he would play well with patches.

Ya however, a 31 year old can still rebound. He is still a professional hockey player.

With the cap the way it is now, it will be interesting to see who will sign him. He also isn't likely to get any term.

The guy really fell off the map from where he was.

Exactly, I'm not saying to sign him to a crazy term, but a 1 or 2 year deal at around 3 to 4 mil might be a great signing.

Look I'm sure he can outplay DD, Eller and Pleks, all of whom have crap contracts.

Devils fans have been very patient with the rebuild but if they were to sign Eric Staal the entire fan base would be out on the ledge. We witnessed first hand how he made the Rangers a better team (sarcasm). Stay with the youth Shero, no gas left in the Staal tank

I'd give him a 1yr deal to prove he isn't done but I can't see him taking it, with his destroyed knee, he will take the longest deal possible.
