According to the rule he's offside, time for some change to it just like replay was initiated after a blown offside call that went the Bolts way vs. Montreal for an overtime winner. Hockey players don't always have both skates on the ice so maybe a change to body position like straddling the line last night. Or take out replays and put it back in the judgement of the linesmen, refs don't have replays for a missed call or a chance to review them so why linesmen, it's a fast game maybe just let comutters play the game and take every human aspect out of it. I would like to see a two minute penalty called for ones that aren't overturned. It really is a delay of the game at that point. Does it matter to last nights game maybe we will never know but the games over so it's time for the GMs to discuss it. Funny though how all the Pens fans are here to defend the rules and that it was offsides, it was by the current definition so move on. I guess you had a win last night so there's no one to trade or throw under the bus today. Geez what a bunch of losers. |

According to NHL rules he was not offside but he was also not onside. Go read the NHL rule, it's awful because in cases like this he was not offside. The NHL needs to make the rule offside or onside, they can't have both like they do. Not the reason the Lightning lost but to score first could have changed the outcome of the game. - Kucherovski
How about the no call offside on Danny Briere in the 2012 playoffs Pit vs Phil He was at least 3 feet off side and nobody saw it At least 3 feet |

I have cried for 4 years straight...
Every day...crying...moaning...then more crying...and ..yes...more moaning
I'm pretty sure there was actually no crying or moaning going on in that comment...just someone trying to point out another specific instance for why they have replay now.
But you know...see it how you like |

Why change it? Every hockey player knows the rule as is and its called correctly 99% of the time, and now 100% with coaches challenges. People should be happy calls are being made correctly these days, despite the delays. Its holding these officials to a higher standard |

So how far offside should you have to be before it is called? Reduce the time to review (please), give them a real screen to watch (could it be any smaller?), or even eliminate the offside rule if you wish (not my preference). The rule is the rule. Enforce it. |

The rule is the rule and it was the correct call. That said, I like many agree that the rule as it is is a stupid rule. The linesman can't possibly be expected to be able to see whether a player like Drouin on the backside flying down the wing has his skate on the ice or not. And it shouldn't matter. They should change it so that if your skate is breaking the plane of the line, whether touching or not, its a good play. We don't need to introduce rules like this that reduce scoring. It certainly benefited the Pens last night, but it just as easily could bite them as early as tomorrow. |

You can argue all day long that the rule stinks, but that doesn't change the fact that the play was offside. Offside is rule, the Bolts were offside and that's that, so again, you argue that being able to challenge the play stinks, but the Bolts were offside. You can't be mad unless you want the NHL to change the offside rule.
I think the rule is good, not because I'm a Pens fan, but because the game is so fast that refs miss countless offside calls in every game. This just helps uphold the rule.
I actually would love the NHL to somehow expand the rule WITHIN REASON to allow teams to challenge improper calls. Again, this game is so fast that refs either miss or make improper calls and that shouldn't stop the league from imposing teams to be able to challenge unfair calls.
Penalties and offside are not subjective. - Rinosaur
I disagree. The intent of the Offside rule is such that a player shouldn't be allowed an unfair advantage by parking themselves on the other end of the rink, thus crossing the blue line prematurely. When we're talking about a skate crossing the line a mere inch or so before the puck, nobody in their right mind could honestly say there's a distinct advantage gained.
The evidence for this is simple, nobody's yelling for video review of close offsides calls for all such infractions, only when a goal was scored and the other team can use this technicality to their advantage.

Offside is a stupid, stupid rule period. Get rid of it. Focus on actual penalties, and then you would see more goals, and game would be more entertaining. Yeah, there would be people hanging out at center or further, waiting for a long pass- you know, like the exciting fast break in basketball? Get rid of the blue line and the red line. Stop calling icing. Focus on fouls! |

Why then was the review initiated? Let's review every penalty too. Linesmen did s great job for 100 years but they changed it. |
