As long as stamkos is unsigned, it’s a possibility to come here. Who knows what impact a SC win has on that.
I think a trade like that for lupul could work.

In that trade, i imagine the pick is whatever lupul as a player (contract aside) is worth.

A team like AZ might be a better fit though. They have crappy expiring contracts in vermette and michalek to offer up and may want the caphit.

Fair enough, but in the short term we considerably weaken an already weak defense.

I get that it's all about tanking but I really think fans in Toronto underestimate Phaneuf. Certainly not a #1 d-man but a decent #2 on a middle of the pack team and #3 on a good team. Not his fault Nonis overpaid him.

- Rang

You are right. But this is summer hockey talk and it does not have to make sense. Ottawa has locked their #1 and #2 Dmen in Karlsson and Methot. They had serious struggles this year in finding a solid second pairing. They are very high on Ceci but needed a veteran to partner him with. This is where they want Phaneuf. He will play the number #4 and Ceci will play the #3. Ottawa has some other good pieces on defence in Wideman and Borowiecki. They could use another big Dman to help out on the penalty kid, but fans are hoping they will cut goals against significantly. In the short term last year Phaneuf had a very positive influence on Ceci's play. Nobody in Ottawa seems to dislike the deal. Lots of Leaf fans appear to be disliking the deal for us. I am happy with the deal and would have hoped Ottawa would have made an offer for Kessel as well.

Did somebody say Galchenyuk was a franchise center? Or am I on acid? Or is the person who said that on acid?

Galch is a good player but franchise center? Oh wait...the Habs franchise. Okay that makes sense.

- Njuice

You're the kind of guy that gives leaf fans a bad name.
You're team was the worst team in the league last year, yet here you are bashing another franchise.
Galchenyuk was a third overall pick even though he missed a whole year of development. Scored 30 last year. Yeah he fits the mold of franchise center.

Agreed from a salary perspective. From a hockey perspective, not so great a deal.

Galchenyuk is a great player and will be an offensive dynamo for years. Not so sure about his D play. He's quite similar to Jason Spezza IMO

Did I read this right?

Did the Leafs trade Phaneuf and took back no long term contracts, AND retained no salary?

I can't believe they did this.

Galchenyuk is good. Labelling him a franchise centre is a bit premature. Maybe he gets there, maybe not.

It's a Leafs thread. If you don't like the bashing don't come here and try and stir up poop. Go back to the Habs thread if you want to discuss how good you think your team is.

So Ottawa is the worst defensive team in rhe league...

And your solution is to make then more like the Leafs. Who bottom fed and couldn't defend. The same team you abandoned?

Seriously man what's wrong with you.

Ok got it. We disagree but I do respect your opinion and understand why you think so.

Let's see how he does next year with a full year not having to play against the other team's top line every night.

I would say he took a big step last year.

Without looking it up, it seems he had a 6-week period where he was on fire? If he finds more consistency this year, and keeps up the production he could be a #1C ...

I have no idea what the term "franchise" means any more so I won't bother debating it.
