JVR and Pitt's pick for 4th overall... that is pretty tempting I think. - Aetherial
I don't know if I agree.
JVR is not an old man, and is right there with Rielly and Kadri as the "prime" players that the team currently has (ie. not vets, not rookies)
He is a 30 goal scorer on a team that lost more 1 goal games than most of the league and is on a super affordable deal for 2 more years.
Who knows what kind of gem Hunter snipes with the PIT pick.
The argument about paying him in 3 years is the same logical fallacy spewed about being handcuffed by a Stamkos signing.
"a 30 goal forward is a 30 goal forward, but the 4th overall could be anything! It could even be a 30 goal forward!" |

Someone gave it hard to Tanner...
You mean, "only on the internet" can someone with the grammatical skills of a seven-year-old be paid fifty cents per week to wildly misinterpret basic statistics to a dozen readers on an illegitimate hockey tabloid site?
If that's what you meant, then I suppose you're right |

JVR got 30 goals once .(exactly 30) Playing with Kessel.
Just saying |

A big body winger, with excellent shot - can score 30 goals in the absence of a true number one centre. #2 pick overall. I think there might be some interest. The Leafs could try to sign him before he's UFA, but he won't be signing for $5 million a year. - winsix
Big body winger who could score 30-40+ with a legit top line center..Yes im sure there would be interest especially from the Leafs...
Why wouldn't Leafs want that??.

I definitely can see him getting traded. Not just yet.
Wouldn't be surprised at deadline or even next season (like after the one coming up) |

You make an excellent point. Keep in mind if the Leafs were pick Tkachuk at fourth in this scenerio - it would be a gamble on a pick with some offensive upside - and significant grit. Van Riemsdyk - while big is a gentle hockey player - will take punishment in front of net, but dishes out very little. Tkachuk also has played with both Matthews and Marner - and has had great success. Controllable assets are major considerations in a salary cap league where quality of players is key but so are salaries.

Three way trade, Van Riemsdyk plus the Pittsburgh pick for a quality defenseman. Move the Defenseman to Edmonton for the pick. Just as an example. - winsix
I'd stop at the quality dman part. Leafs need that more than they need Tkachuk.
If Stamkos lands in T.O. there's probably enough depth up front to move JVR for that dman. |

I think jvr should be kept. Regardless of Stamkos. Actually especially if they get Stamkos. |

If they can resign him for the right price I agree. His value in trade will decline the closer he gets to UFA. And the Leafs will surely have to pay for the talent that they are developing. Right now his contract is excellent, if he agreed to a five year extension for $6 million a year - I think the front office would do that. I am not certain he will be easy to sign for that.

I just presume that Ikea coffee tables aren't going for much of a return?
Maybe though ...

I like him too. He may price himself out of the plan but that's still a year or two away. I just think they need a young established D partner for Rielly to partner up with. |

Well if they sign Stamkos, and we need to ship out a 4+ mil contract for some breathing room, I sure as hope it is Bozak over JVR |

I dont disagree but we also need wingers for Kadri and Matthews and Stamkos and he's so cap friendly. I think they can add a dman with picks and prospects. Or I hope, at least |

Bozak is likely gone, especially if leafs land Stamkos. Returns will depend on Lou. I would say a deadline deal for a second and a third is possible, if he lands a big fish a protected first rounder. You would have to add alot to the package. |

I hope the leafs had at least some initial discussions with jvr, re: next contract.
If they are reasonably close in dollars, then I expect him to be on the roster next year.
If they ship him out this draft day, then they were probably too far apart.
his ntc may kick in july 1, potentially expediting a decision. |

Leafs are fine Cap/$$ wise. I was talking about asset management. JVR for an equivalent dman. Maybe, Leafs are in a good position either way. |

Yeah, luckily we have two more seasons - but if he puts up two more 30 goal seasons he'll be in the $6-$7 range for sure. And that's fine. He's currently our only 1st line forward. Paying great players the amount they deserve will result in a great team. Eventually... |

If we get stammer Bozak is traded the next day. Otherwise he's gone at this deadline, and he will fetch a nice return. Very good player - but he's quickly moving down the depth chart in Toronto. |

I think they have him locked up for 2 more years so those discussions probably don't start until next summer. |
